At one time Bristol was full of tightly packed timber-framed houses with upper story balconies jutting out into the street like the one Anthem inhabits, but now few are left. Pleasingly, 27, St Michael's Hill retains complete architectural integrity because the restaurant operates in the warren of small, bare-bricked rooms, alcoves and passageways which constitute the interior. The menu, however, in contrast, gallops across the wide-open spaces of world cuisine, stopping where it may, and fusing where it thinks fit, Thai green curry here, Cajun squid there, chilli chocolate éclairs somewhere else; and there are lots of vegetarian options too. In the background, music from all genres and cultures enhances the laid back atmosphere: Anthem gets the world to sing.
