What we say

One of the most attractive restaurants in the city, Bayside Brasserie is an oasis of style and a port of call for anyone wishing to experience a quality dining experience in a relaxing and welcoming environment.

Unashamedly chic, the dining room offers unrivalled views over Cardiff Bay's fashionable waterfront. The bar and fresh food display counter create a metropolitan ambience, whilst the contemporary architecture surrounding a magnificent central chandelier allows natural light to flood the room and reflect the beauty and spaciousness of the interior.

Embracing a passion for excellence, Bayside Brasserie offers diners a perfectly-balanced mix of modern European dishes complemented with classic brasserie favourites – each dish taking inspiration from the day's market produce and so reflecting the changing seasons. With the emphasis on the finest quality raw materials, all ingredients are sourced daily by the Bayside Brasserie's own Chef.

Diners are invited to visit the chilled display counter to choose from a bewildering range of fresh seafood and meats, including Dover sole, hake, lemon sole, monkfish, steak, veal, chicken and cuts of best Welsh lamb – all cooked to order in the expansive open-plan kitchen. In the meantime, guests can help themselves to fresh salad from Bayside Brasserie's varied salad bar.

A comprehensive wine list features the very best that France, Spain and Italy have to offer, as well as a wide range of New World wines. There is also an excellent choice of Champagnes and a very special selection of fine ports, brandies and malt whiskies to finish.

The secret of the success of Bayside Brasserie is its philosophy of balancing the best traditions of the past, whilst creating a fresh dining experience for the future.

I had always wanted to try Bayside Brasserie as I had had many recommendations from friends who had said the food was fantastic. The setting is probably the nicest in the Bay and the food choices were good. I enjoyed my mussels though the portion was small and I thought we should have had bread included (we paid for a portion separately). My steak was very good though the portion of potato wedges was small. Dessert, a sticky toffee pudding was delicious, couldn't fault it. All in all, very nice but our total bill came to about £77 - which I deem very expensive for a meal for two without a bottle of wine.

Four of us dined to celebrate a birthday in the Bayside Brasserie with its excellent setting. The restaurant was less than 5% full (I counted!) and now I know why.

I had mussels to start which were just warm and for this I cut them some slack and didn't complain even though everyone knows that mussels MUST be piping hot for food safety reasons. However, being someone's birthday and not wishing to spoil the event I kept quiet.

My next course was steak and chips and for this I certainly had to complain. The chips came luke warm in a complete solid mass saturated in fat. The chips had to be prised apart using the skill of a surgeon. When we returned the chips the open plan chef merely scraped them off the plate and back into the frier after which they were exactly the same except hotter!!

Again not wanting to spoil the evening, I paid in full and even left a suitable tip as the waiting staff were quite good. It was the cooking side that let them down.

We filled in their 'satisfaction survey' and followed it up with an email. They responded by saying that they would send a complementary voucher for our next visit which seemed fair enough. However, when the voucher arrived it was for a mere £20 off our next visit. We had spent over £140 for our first visit and if we repeated the visit this would equate to a discount of a mere 7%. It was an insult - especially as I had already tipped by 10%!

So there you have it - if you want a good setting (and cynical after-sales service) then go: but if you want good food then keep away.

For location it must be the envy of most the restaurants at the Bay (perhaps minus Signor Valentinos). For drink selection it again receives a very big thumbs-up. However, the Bayside Brasserie (like its sister attached to Le Monde and The Priory in Caerleon) tends to offer overpriced food in small portions.

I last visited with 12 work colleagues and ate from the set-menu. I had a chicken noodle starter which was too small: a dessert spoon would have held the entire contents with ease. For main course I had cod loin on a bed of seeds- it was either that or a burger in my mind and meat in a bun was an unacceptable choice for my settings. The pudding was tasty but again too small. It is a strange feeling when you leave a restaurant feeling hungrier than when you entered.

The staff serving us were bi-lingual and on several occasions our requests were misinterpreted- this takes some of the polish of the service and is why I award them 3 stars for this field.

There are probably many people out there who have had a fantastic time here and sampled delectable food. And I don’t doubt that to be the case. I just feel that my experience of the Bayside Brasserie has left me feeling they are rely heavily on their location and branding for business....

I had heard from freinds that they had eaten at the Bayside Brasserie and had enjoyed it so when friends that I hadn't seen for a while suggested meeting up for dinner I was happy to make it at the Bayside Brasserie. I wasn't dissapointed. The staff were freindly, the food great and the service excellent.

The menu was interesting and varied and we were spoilt for choice. I thought that the prices were also reasonable and an enjoyan=ble evening was had by all.

Although we were a party of adults on this occasion, I felt that it would be a good choice for children too and I know that my 11 year old son would love it here. I will be returning.

My Partner and I decided to have lunch here before we went to the Theatre. It was a very enjoyable experience. The food was excellent, I have to mention the asparagus soup, the most delicious soup I have ever tasted.. The service was very friendly and efficient. I must comment on the ladies toilets, how wonderful to go into a spotless, nice smelling environment, very important. The location of this restaurant is lovely and the restaurant itself was tastefully decorated. All in all a very enjoyable lunch and when we visit cardiff bay again we will definately be dining in this restaurant again.

We had an excellent evening at the Bayside Brasserie for my sisters birthday recently. The restaurant is contemporary and has a lovely atmosphere. The six members of our party enjoyed their meals and there was plenty of food for all. The staff encouraged us to go and have a look at the fresh meet and fish layed out on the counter. It all looked wonderful. The staff were first class and very helpful. We will definitely return and recommend to friends. Many thanks for a great night.

As it was my birthday on 30 January, we decided to have a nice Sunday lunch with the family at the Bay. We decided to go to the Bayside Brasserie as we had not been there before. The food was lovely, well presented and hot and did not take too long to arrive... The atmosphere was very chilled out and, if the children had not been with us, we could have stayed for hours - we were sat in a window seat, overlooking the bay which was fantastic - a few glasses of wine would have gone down very well!

All in all, a lovely time was had and we will be returning.

What an absluote pleasure it was dining with one of Wales' most iconic backdrops (Cardiff Bay) only a quick glance away. I can't stress enough, the importance of location when entertaining. I started the evening with o lovely french red to open the palet and calm the nerves, and decided to sample the salad. "Highly recommended" was the quote in the menu, and never one to turn down a boast I turned to the woman and said,

"You and I will have the salad ok dear!" Along came a splendid chap, tall with foreign looks, and led us to the salad bar. We helped ourselves and sat down, both of us excited at the prospect of tasting the salad that was, as I was led to beleive, "Highly recommended". I'm afraid to say it wasn't great....I would go as far as to say it was very poor. I was distraugh, and the female I was with seemed to take this as a personal insult directed at her, dished out by the resteraunt on my behalf. I tried to talk things through but she didn't seem interested.

"I'll have the sea bass and she will have the steak..... medium rare please" I said with an air of annoyance that was meant to indicate just how upset myself and the woman had become from all of the deceit.

"No problem sir" he charmingly replied. How could I be upset with a man with such a wonderful smile and such confidence around a dining table, I thought to myself. It probably wasn't him that wrote the menu either. He reminded me of an early Antonio Banderas in the film "Philedelphia". But this time there was no one dying of a terrible desease....only of mild starvation due to the poor salad.

The food arrived in under a pleasing 20 minutes. To say the slate was wiped clean after the salad episode, is an insult. That slate was thrown at lightining pace into oblivion as soon as the lady cutely wrinkled her eyes in gastronomical appreciation. Apprectiation that stayed with me and made my sea bass taste even sweeter. The lady decided to speak and said something along the lines of it being sweet because of the "citrus fuits that it's cooked in" or something to that extent. I politely told her not to talk so much and enjoy her food, and she knew what I meant.

Antonio came to the table and I felt as though I had missed him since I saw him last.

    "How's the food?"

"Oh it's swell, really pleasant" I said

    "And the steak....?"

"She's really having a great time with that steak" I said while nodding and looking over at the female.

After we finished eating Antonio was back,

    "Any deserts?"

"Um....yes please... one creme brulee with two spoons please" I said. The woman gave a shy smile as if to thank me for thinking about her figure. I knew this and decided not to say anything more. Ofcourse, the desert was very lovely....delightfully so. The lady ate slightly more than her agreed half but seeing as I was in such a good mood it didn't seem bother me.

I paid what was a very reasonable bill and decided to look for Antonio to thank him. I couldn't find him. I wondered whether going in the kitchen to look for him was inappropriate, and decided against it. Never mind....maybe next time.

As a visitor to Cardiff my wife and I were not at all familiar with restaurants in the city. A friend kindly loaned us their Cardiff Invitation Book and we soon decided on a visit to the Bay. The review of Bayside Brasserie was tempting so on a cold January Thursday evening we made a reservation. - We weren't disappointed!

The food was absolutely first class and the service equally as good. We couldn't fault it. The only negatives were the atmotsphere - there were only 6 or 7 couples dining - a sign of the times I guess, and the incredibly quick service which had us finishing our meal earlier than we had planned! On presentation of my Invitation Diners card £17 was discounted off the bill. A great end to a very very pleasant evening. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

My partner and I have recently moved to Cardiff Bay, which in itself is a great place to go. Out of all the places the Bay has to offer, we chose the Bay Brasserie as our first meal out, we were both extremely pleased with the standard of service, and the food was very satisfying. With such a lovely view of the bay also, it was very enjoyable, a place I would definately return to for a meal out. The puddings are gorgeous. If you havent tried it yet, I'd recommend it!

Visited on my wife's birthday, with my daughters and partners. Had a lovely evening, atmosphere warm and welcoming, staff friendly and efficient, great service. The choice on the menu was excellent something to please everyone. Starters were sumptous, with the salad bar a real winner. Steaks and fish were succulent and the sticky toffee pudding a real treat to round it all off. Great wine list and whole package reasonably priced. Can't wait to go again.

The bayside brasserie is just perfect. Its conveniently located in the mermaid quay complex and has spectacular views over cardiff bay. The staff were very friendly and always made sure you were ok. I highly recommend the steak, it was cooked to perfection!! I will definately be visting again, to try something else divine off the menu and this time I am going to leave room for the tasty looking dessert.

I came here for my birthday with my Girlfriend and my Borther. We were immediately greated by the friendly staff and were taken to our table. My favourite was the wine list, and the staffs knowledge about it... the food was amazing the experience was great. Would definitely come back here again. I love the ambience and the chilled lighting of the resturant. A must visit place if you haven been before

With 3 friends we visited the restaurant for the first time and were immediately greeted as we entered the restaurant. The restaurant was light and airy with plenty of space between tables. The menu was heavenley and it was difficult to make a selection but we were not hurried. The two course menu that is served in the week was very good value. Lovely food, wine and excellent service can't wait to book again!

Very good food, both in terms of range of choice on the menu and quality. All 6 of us who dined at the Brasserie enjoyed it. The king prawn starter has to be seen to be believed! Also pretty reasonably priced. Definitely go there again, and I guess that's as good a recommendation you can get?! :)

This was my first visit to this restaurant and I enjoyed it very much. It was very warm and friendly and the service from the staff was excellent. I would definitely recommend it to my other colleagues and my friends. My partner has a dairy allergy which is sometimes a problem but I was impressed that the menu included plain grilled food.

I have been meaning to eat here for some time but had never got round to it... I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The food was superb with a wide range of choice for starters, maiins and desserts. I could only manage two courses, seeing the variety of desserts being taken to other tables was painful as they looked mouth watering! The service was first class and surroundings classy and comfortable.

I would definately recommend this as a place to eat,you will not be disappointed and I will of course be returning.
