As the name would suggest, this is quintessentially French but with a twist in the tapas-like (but still French) dishes which are sized so that it's possible to have at least a couple to yourself. Owned by renowned chef Michel Lemoine, it was his idea to produce smaller, succulent dishes served in the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of a neighbourhood eaterie.
Their dedication to fresh, quality food is matched by their dedication to wine and they regularly attend tastings to carefully select those that complement meals on offer. For those with preferences for a large plate of grub, their menu offers sizeable daily specials alongside popular classics.

Ever since my first visit to La Barrique in 2008 (see my earlier review) I have been looking for an excuse to revisit, and then it came. My memory was more of how I had raved about the place more than the meal itself, but I wasn't disappointed. Still the same excellent food, still wine by the glass. We were one of only two tables of people in the house for lunch on Saturday, which I found amazing. Although that the restaurant was so quiet, service was sometimes a bit difficult to attract, but our waitress was certainly friendly and the food was delivered quickly and well. Definitely somewhere I would happily return to (again).

Made a last minute decision on Saturday night to wander to our local restaurant Bistro La Barrique. As usual, it was bustling with every table full of happy diners. The menu had changed from the last time and there were plenty of treats to choose from on the Tapas style menu. We went for the duck which I would definitely recommend. The King Prawns were a little on the small side but tasty none-the-less. Would definitely return - nice location either for a quiet dinner for two, meal with the parents or a more noisey evening with friends.

Love this style of eating , lots of different dishes to share with lots of different flavours .Can order main dishes but these are limited on choices .Easily 3 smaller tapas selection per person is amble for a good appetite. Maybe a side dish too which are all delicious.Over 50 different wines you can have by the glass which is brilliant and the cost of doing this is not too expensive so you can try different wines to go with each dish .

What a suprise, I was told to expact small french tapas when actually what I got was small plates of delicious sharable food, main course standard. It may look and sound terrible but by fat my favourite dish was the squid ink linguine, so creamy and tasty. each plate we shared between 5, nibbling away like church mice. We ordered in two batches, so it fitted onto our table and every morsel was a taste explosion. Really good for your veggie freinds too, seeing as they are usually left with just goats cheese something.
Good choice of booze and the hot chocolate is ab fab. Try with some friends!

A friend suggested lunch. I had seen La Barrique when I drove past a couple of weeks ago, so I suggested it. He had already been and said it was very good and that's where we went. Almost all of the extensive wine list is available by the bottle, 50cl carafe or the glass. The lunch deal was for two "petits plats" and a side for just under a tenner. This turned out to be very good value. The food was excellent and the service friendly. There was no problem when we needed a few extra moments to make our decision.

La Barrique is a real gem on the Gloucester Road. The food is simple, tasty and consistently good and I love to eat petit plats (French tapas)as opposed to eating just one thing. Perfect for sharing and loads of choice for carnivores, pescetarians and vegetarians. Delicious puddings too. Also all their wine is availavle by the glass and they have an amazing selection. Food and drink is all reasonably priced and the athmosphere is great. Its wonderful on summer evenings when you can sit out the front.
