What we say

From its modest beginnings over 30 years ago as a small Brighton bistro, the Browns empire is now a grand corporate affair which still stays true to the lessons learned at the outset. The company pioneered the art of creating a look, atmosphere and menu that was as appealing to a student or smart young thang as to a business suit or Great Aunt Martha.

The beige and green colours, rich leather seating and sharp designs exclude no-one and the menus are broad in their appeal. This clever construct is enhanced even further by the stunning setting, a former museum which opened as Browns in '92. Based on the Doge's Palace in Venice, the broad steps out front lead up through vaulted arches, double doors into a huge, L-shaped emporium which has the feel of a timeless European brasserie, all high ceilings, oversized plants, ceiling fans and dark wood fittings.

The food is also modern brasserie style with familiar favourites to suit most tastes and budgets, from burgers and fish pies to pan fried prawns. The specials are good too and although hardly cutting edge cuisine or wildly adventurous, you can't really go wrong when looking for a safe option.

on monday we had a table for eight including my three grandchildren to celebrate one of their birthdays.

i cannot complement the establishment enough.

food excellent - staff excellent - price excellent

my wife and i have been to browns often and have enjoyed the same experience.

Amazingly they can do for eight what they can manage for two - servicewise.

not even traffic wardens fine you for waiting here!

I went to Brows with my parents, sister, wife and neice.

They were very accommodating to my three year old neice (though we did eat early) and are very child friendly.

I has the baked flat mushrooms for starter which came in a lovely garlic sauce, a bit of extra bread would have been nice but never the less it was tasty.

For mains I had the rib-eye steak, it was great value and very tender. The peppercorn sauce was a little disappointing and could have been more "peppery" but overall I was very satisfied wth the meal.

Brows is a nice restaurant in a great location. It is very noisy but that does add to it's atmosphere. The food is not super high end but then again nor are the prices. It is what it is and I will definitely be going back.

I've visited Browns many times before and had a very mixed experience. After my last visit I swore I wouldn't go back, but I wasn't paying today so not my decision. I'm rather glad we did go as it was a pleasant surprise! My food, whilst simple, was really delicious! Our waitress was prompt, as was the food. Really no complaints at all.

A great starting place before a night on the town. Service quick, atmosphere lively. Food simple but good. Steak and chips - that sort of thing.

Fantastic location and a huge dining area in the old University refectory. Really friendly young Staff. A fabulous array of bottled and draft beers to choose from. I took my future Mother-In-Law, Fiancee, sister and 2 year old Nephew, so quite a mix of ages.... However the menu catered for all and we had a really enjoyable hour here at Browns. The restaurant is busy and for some reason you can't pre-book a table? But we risked it and got in complete with highchair for my 2 year old nephew, colouring crayons and a kiddies menu. I had the Steak & mushroom pie and fries it was amazing. Great home -cooked flavour and a huge portion. All polished down with a bottle of house rose. Reasonably priced and really worth a visit to enjoy the light and airy sourrounds. However you need to get there early though as it gets very busy and you can't pre-book!

This was the second time I have been to browns and on each occasion the food has been lovely. The portion sizes are just right but the drinks could do with being a little cheaper, a small glass of wine was quite expensive.
