What we say

Budokan in Colston Street was one of the first pan-Asian restaurants in Bristol. It was so successful that another branch since opened at Clifton Down Shopping Centre on Whiteladies Road with both sites receiving a welcome upgrade in quality under the new ownership of legendary Bristol master chef Chris Wicks, the man behind the Bells Diner success story. With long solid wood tables and benches and a bar well stocked with sake, Japanese beer and other Asian beverages, Budokan still offers the proletariat approach to dining, like Wagamama, a communal experience but with more style. The view from the huge windows across Whiteladies Road and up into Cotham Hill is truly Bristol. Shoppers delight in the Rapid Refuel at lunchtime - a real bargain which includes sushi, a side dish and a main rice or noodle dish. The sushi is good and all dishes, whether a Thai curry or Vietnam broth, are freshly made. In the evening the bar and relaxed contemporary dining style draws all comers.

I go to Budokan for the rapid refuel- a low price fixed menu.

Consistently good Asian food, speedy service at low cost.

We have a lovely meal here. Friendly staff, a good range of drinks and an interesting menu. Our food was prompt, delicious, and well proportioned. My only complaint was that whilst the music in the restaurant was quite pleasant when we arrived, the club next door decided to drown it out from about 10pm onwards. We were late going for dinner, and many people might not be affected, but certainly the bass coming through the walls hampered discussion towards the end of our meal.

By far my favourite restaurant in Bristol. It's much cosier than its sister restaurant in Colston Road, as it doesn't suffer from the high ceilings. Its staff are so friendly and helpful you feel like you've known them for years. Although I'm not vegetarian I do tend to only eat the fish and veg dishes here because they are so tasty I don't need meat. There's such a wide selection of well-cooked and prepared cuisine that there's something to suit every pallet and wallet size. The portions are generous and you can watch the chefs making your dinner, or the world of Whiteladies Road pass by from below without feeling like you're in a fishbowl.

    Brilliant!!

I have been a few times and the Thai Green Curry is my favourite.......I highly reccomend you give it a try. The lunchtime re-fuels are good value for money and they also have a take-away service - much better than the local chinese!! They also allow you to pre-order for group bookings which is handy when you are dining with a large group.

A great alternative to Wagamama offering a different set of Asian dishes and some great Asian beers. The starting prawn crackers with peanut and chilli dips are a great start to the meal and go down a little too quickly. Then two dishes we tried here were the Vietnamese Beef Pho (a beef soup) which nicely spiced but didnt quite have enough beef in and the Teryaki Duck which was amazing. The duck was nicely cooked and the sweet taste of the teryaki sauce was a perect accompaniement. The seating is informal and communal so if you prefer a private dining experience you may find you have some unwelcome guests sitting a little too close.

Lovely place - the communal seating is refreshingly informal compared to typical restaurant seating arrangements. Chefs' preparing the food within view also adds to the experience. Good food and good beer. Loves it!

This is a restaurant I go back to over and over, however in recent times the menu has changed and the ambience seems to have gone down hill somewhat.

The food is EXCELLENT and you can see it being cooked, the service can be a little ropey though if they are busy but the early bird special is well worth doing.

Somewhere to go if you want a cheap excellent meal and a good chat!
