Once startlingly original and a sumptuous alternative to most Bristol restaurants, this converted Victorian warehouse overlooking St Mary Redcliffe church has become known as a party destination, whether for a wedding, corporate night out or Christmas dinner. It certainly caters for the special occasion well with its exotic interior, belly dancers and magicians. On entering through an aged, wooden double-door, you lead into a cavernous downstairs bar and dance area which leads up a sweeping, marbled staircase to the first floor dining room decorated with rag-rolled ochre colours, subdued lighting and Middle Eastern vibe.
The modern Mediterranean menu is good, using fresh local produce but, despite working well as a large-scale venue, it doesn't always appeal for the lower key, regular dining out.

I visited on a Wednesday evening with some work colleagues and choose from the Christmas menu, which was a surprise as I thought being named Byzantium there might be some Turkish or Greek influence, but the menu is pretty standard european.
The restaurant was very crowded, but service was ok (although twice we had cutlery dropped on us as the staff reached over us.) The menu choice was ok and when the food arrived I thought that it was good but not brilliant.
Entertainment was provided but this was limited to a couple of magicians going around the crowded tables and a disco downstairs.
Overall I did not feel the evening was worth the price they were charging.

I would agree about this place not appealing to regular diners. Firstly, it's too expensive so naturally becomes an 'event' meal for special occasions - I'd be more tempted if they had an early evening set menu. The venue is very grand but confused me slightly as although it was decorated in a Middle- Eastern style, the food was distinctly European - struck me as odd as the name implies Turkish. Went here for a birthday and food was really good but I don't fancy returning as of yet - felt a bit cold and aloof. Would be a fab venue for a posh wedding though, after tripping out of St Mary Redcliffe opposite.
