What we say

Having won Best Vegetarian Restaurant in the UK, among countless other awards, this small, smart, suburban restaurant in the backstreets of Easton has really raised the bar when it comes to dishing up inventive, vegetarian cuisine. Even hardened carnivores are impressed by the creative menus which pull together organic, seasonal and locally sourced produce in to subtle but powerfully flavoured combinations like their butternut squash and double Worcester soufflé with red grape and tragon salsa. The ethos is all about caring - the word Maitreya comes for the Sanskrit for 'universal love' - but this is no hippy dippy love shack. It's smart, professional and serves top, notch food which just happens to be vegetarian.

If alfalfa sprouts are your thing....

As hardened, arterie-clogged meat eaters, we succomed to the many reviews both on this site and various other awards from Vegan Societies and Vegetarian Associations galore, and gave Maitreya (how do you spell it?) a try.

It didn't dissapoint; the food is tasty with innovatively constructed dishes which is what puts it ahead of other 'veggie' venues.

BUT it was COLD, brrrrrh, and with only 1 small electric heater to be seen, I wished I'd worn a me aul wolly cardi.

I have to say, very veggie food (and I don't mean carb-rich pastas or currys) is not as filling as meat, which on a positive note, meant we could take advantage of the 3 courses for the price of 2 mid-week offer, and walk away comfortably full.

Overall, a nice friendly, well managed restaurant in the heart of Easton and will probably return in warmer weather.

For someone who normally orders chicken, beef or lamb I very much enjoyed the food on offer. The portion sizes were good, the service was friendly and the food tasted excellent. I ate the spinach + broth starter which had a lot of depth and reminded me a little of the flavours of hoi sin sauces. The main was vegetarian cannelloni which had a side of fennel which complemented it well. The dessert was a rich nutty Christmas-pudding-like slice with coconut ice cream and figs - very filling but tasty.

I visited cafe maitreya for my boyfriend's 30th and despite my not being a vegetarian myself I think I this is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The service is friendly and prompt, the food uses a wide variety of flavours and textures and each course was more wonderful than the one before. I would highly recommend going here and am already planning my next visit!

Always a pleasure, visiting Maitreya is such a treat for a vegetarian. It is lovely to have so much choice and the wonderful thing is that the food is unusual. I am a good cook and I get something I don't cook at home here.

six of us ate here on Saturday night - four of us have eaten here many times and love it, and we brought along a veggie and a confirmed carnivore. As usual we found Maitreya to be a mixed bag - most of the food is divine but if you make the wrong choice, it can be very disappointing (the ceviche for example). Upshot was, the carnivore loved the food but the veggie was luke-warm. Also we were seated next to an unpainted, empty wine rack along the whole of one wall which didn't do much for atmosphere. On the plus side, the complimentary pre-starter and pre-pud were unexpected bonuses and the whole meal vg VFM. We appreciated the fairtrade wine option too. Hopefully we can get the veggie back for a second opinion!

Excellent value for money, and really interesting food, well presented, well cooked, fresh and seasonal. Once had a rather bizarre sweet/sour combo involving rhubarb, which didn't work so well, but on the whole it's great, and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it. Service excellent, but you need to book in plenty of time for a weekend.

As a vegetarian it is a truly wonderful experience to go to a restaurant where there is more than one choice on the menu (and it's not risotto!!) More than that, Cafe M serves some really interesting dishes, experimenting with flavours and the food is lovely. The staff were lovely, very helpful and friendly. Only downsides - which are completely subjective, are that it's quite pricey and in my opinion the atmosphere was a little sterile.

You wouldn't expect to get a fine dining experience in the middle of Easton but that's what Cafe Maitreya is. As a committed carnivore I was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't a nut roast or ricotta and spinanch lasagne in sight - the cooking was unusual (we had no idea what most of the ingredients were!) and wonderfully presented. Wasn't heaving plates of food but it was a nice change not to feel bloated at the end of meal - instead you felt like you had enjoyed some really fresh tastes. Really good service - my only minor complaint was that it was a bit cold but a bottle of red put paid to that! Would definately go again - real value for money, if this was in Clifton you'd pay a lot more.
