If you want hot Indian food in a cool setting, look no further than Cardiff Bay’s Café Naz. Maintaining a classic Indian identity coupled with ultra-modern fittings, it is superbly situated overlooking the bay and St David's Hotel.
The interior feels more city chic than traditional Indian but manages to feel warm and welcoming. The service is polite without being stuffy, a standard which is maintained throughout the evening.
Suited waiters and traditionally-dressed waitresses show you to your table where you can order from a menu which includes starters such as the Bangladeshi speciality of chingri puri – lightly-spiced prawns breaded and deep fried or pahadi tikka – spiced chicken martinated in mint. Follow this with a main course such as garlic chilli fish, palak lamb with spinach, or the Chef's recommended gosht kata masala – lamb with onion, ginger and garlic in a masala sauce. Desserts include the enticing tartufo – chocolate ice cream hidden under a delicate cocoa powder coating, a must for chocaholics, or simply try one of the Mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktails) such as Kashmiri falooda, the house speciality.
Part of a very successful chain of five restaurants born in London’s Brick Lane, the Cardiff addition to the group is just as impressive, with bags of personality. Situated in the upper realms of Mermaid Quay’s varied series of restaurants, this venue has a contemporary feel that means it doubles as a place to enjoy a fleeting lunch, as well as a glamorous night out.
