It's impossible to think of France without imagining yourself at the quintessential Gallic café, enjoying all of the culinary charms that our friends over the Channel have to offer. The good news is that now you don't actually have to take that journey to recreate this kind of dining experience. You can inject a little "ooh la la" into your everyday life by visiting Café Rouge. Sit back and relax into breakfast, lunch or an evening meal and experience that "je ne sais quoi" of French know how that makes Café Rouge such a popular choice.
Breakfast is a delight with the obligatory croissants and pain aux raisins on the menu, however there are also some surprises with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on toasted brioche and savoury pancakes filled with mushrooms making an appearance.
Of course, for lunch and dinner the old French classics are ever-present and the starters immediately transport you into a little Gallic bistro with onion soup, deep fried camembert, mussels and Brittany pancakes filled with smoked haddock, all on offer. You can then move onto smoked Toulouse sausages, beef Bourguignon or the classic steak frites, before wrapping up your meal with one of the delightful desserts.
If you fancy something lighter there is a myriad of salads to choose from, including goat's cheese, spicy Merguez sausage and classic Caesar, as well as sandwiches such as the famous Croque Monsieur and chargrilled steak and chicken baguettes.
Put all of this together with some fantastic wines and a varied children's menu to keep the little ones happy, and you'll be glad you tried a taste of France - even if it's just for a little while. Bon Appetit!

This is a buzzy restuarant with a drop in feel about it. The staff are extremely helpful and cheerful. Nothing is too much trouble. The food is great, not a baited breath type of food but more of a lets relax in an easy chair type. There's no surprises here because, its what you see is what you get. Nothing wrong with that. Its reliable and thats good. It has a continental Paris cafe feel about it.

An attentive and friendly welcome! We were then shown to our table towards the back of this lovely restaurant and promptly given the menus. The really "nice" thing about Cafe Rouge in Bath is the decor. It does set up for a French-styled dinner. A little french music could possible add to the ambience. It was a while before the waiter took a drinks order and I'm not sure he totally understood exactly what we said. Heh, ho. We do seem to have a little problem with "bread". It could just be us...but it was forgotten, yet again.
Anyway the starters ~ Soupe à l'Oignon and Terrine Maison were very good. Our mains which included Moules du Café Rouge and Boeuf Bourguignon were well-presented, tasty and hot.
It doesn't happen very often, but we both decided to have a dessert. My husband's Sablé aux Fruits Rouges just filled that little hole that was left in his tummy!. My Assiette de Fromages seemed a little expensive but was quite enjoyable. I did question the cheeses served and was willingly shown the prescribed laminated sheet from the kitchen, indicatng food layout and portion size. This did suggest a touch of pre-preparation and prescription with regard to Cafe Rouges' menu as a whole...I may be wrong.
Anyway, we did enjoy the meal and would happily return. it was our fourth visit!
The bill with a bottle of water, a pint and 10% tip came to £60. Tescos vouchers did help out a tad!

We had a lovely lunch at Cafe Rouge. When we arrived we were told there would be quite a long wait but we were quite happy with this as the atmosphere in the restaurant is lovely as it is a nice building. However, we didn't wait long the food was great, the service good and overall a lovely lunch.
