What we say

This is not so much Churchill House (pictures of the great man litter the walls) but Church Hill House, named for the hill opposite. This large family-oriented pub sits on the road between Swindon and Wootton Bassett, just south of Junction 16 of the M4, and offers seating for 180 in the traditionally decorated interior, with room for more on the outside seating at the front. The specially-built Bumpy's Magic Kingdom (“whizz down the slide, see the views from Bumpy's areoplane windows, wobble on the rope bridge, climb the roller ladder plus much, much more”) is of particular interest to anyone under four foot nine. The food, served all day and in huge portions, is traditional British with jackets and sandwiches on offer from the lunch menu, and a more extensive main menu (steaks, seafood, vegetarian) which does pay an occasional nod to the world beyond Wootton Bassett.

I remember going to the then churchill house years ago and the food was always lovely proper pub grub!

Unfortunatly this is no longer the case! I visited on a monday when the resturant was pretty quiet. The food was very bland and most of my table couldnt finish their food, exept one who had fish & chips and said it was lovely.

There isnt a very large pudding selection & the restuarant had run out of alot of the puddings & mains.

The service was pretty poor also, the girls on the bar were chatting so much that they couldnt even see a queue form. However some off the waiting staff seemed to be making themselves busy, but none were particularly friendly.

The only really impressive thing about this resturant is the decoration, which is very tasteful, however it sadly cant compensate for the bland food.

Went to the Churchill for a family birthday meal, 7 adults and 2 kids. We chose the pub speicifcally for its kids facilities, but found them closed when we arrived at 6:30 on a saturday evening - prime time for family meals out. We had to wait for a table, and after ordering our food, waited over an hour for it arrive. When it was finally "served" by the rude waiting staff, it was luke warm and pretty dire. The mashed potato was instant mash, the 10oz steak was more like a 5oz, the chicken was rubbery and the jacket potatoes part raw, they couldn't even manage to serve up hot chips! If you're looking for a good value place for a family meal out, avoid the Churchill!

The refurb has made the place look nice, but what's the point if they can't get the rest of it right?
