What we say

Family-owned Cibo Ristorante, in the heart of Gloucester road, epitomises this unique area of Bristol. Owners Dino and Mary Caidominici have been serving up warmth and Italian fare to the local community since 1988, with Cibo metamorphosing from traditional Italian deli to stylish contemporary eatery.

This year sees Cibo’s most adventurous menu to date, fusing traditional Italian flavours with ingredients from around the world: with the likes of Ostrich fillet pan-fried in rich wild mushroom sauce, and medallions of venison in juniper berry and port reduction. If you are after more traditionally Italian fare, Chef Marco Olivieri serves up pizza and pasta with the same no-nonsense flair he brings to the whole Cibo menu.

Through a large smoked glass window into the kitchen, you can see all your food being freshly prepared. No smoke’n’mirrors or microwaves here, just fresh ingredients cooked with passion. With a fine choice of wines from locally sourced Italian vineyards, and daily changing desserts (make sure you check the boards) Cibo offers a relaxed and welcoming environment. For a less nocturnal experience, pop in and sample one of the finest Mediterranean buffets around – a great deal at &6 for two plates. Or try the freshly prepared soup of the day with your pizza, pasta, salad, seafood, cold meats and so much more. Top it all off with one of the things that Cibo has long been renowned for – an authentic Italian cappuccino.

I am a big fan of this restaurant and think it is one of the best Italian restaurants in the UK, but had a disappointing finish to a Xmas lunch with my Italian class here.(I think there were ten of us). Basically the buffet has a set price; if you want an extra, separate meat course brought to your table it costs more. One of our party misunderstood when the final bill was being made up and volunteered that she'd had meat (as there were sausages in one of the buffet dishes), so was charged several pounds extra.. despite 2 of us trying to explain to the waitress the misunderstanding she insisted on the extra charge, which caused a lot of hassle, and was ridiculous and obviously wrong. Anyway it was the principle and left a few of us with a bad taste after an otherwise nice meal.

My family and I regularly visit Cibo to enjoy the lunchtime buffet. At £6 per head for all you want to eat it's excellent value. Not just for the quantity, but for quality too, with delicious green salads, a hearty soup, pizzas, pastas and a meat dish or two. It's at its best when it's busy, as the turnover of food on the buffet table is rapid and the enthusiastic kitchen staff send out new dishes to try all the time. The owner and waiting staff in there are very friendly, but also very laid back so you might not be seated straightaway. If you think lightning fast service is an essential part of the restaurant experience you might be disappointed, but if you want to enjoy great food at a good price, in a place run by genuinely nice people who will make you feel like part of the family, this is the perfect choice.

After hearing a few good things from other Eatouters, I thought we should try this place. And, as it's fairly close to the house, we can now firmly say this will be one of our regular haunts. The greeting on arrival is typically Italian - very friendly and we were seated very quickly with our drinks order taken immediately. The starters of mussels were delivered promptly and were delicious. Mains included ostrich and steak and were served with very fresh veg. Overall the food was very good and we noticed the pizzas and pastas were very reasonably priced if we wanted to come back for a quick mid-week meal.

But the most fun bit came when the restaurant emptied out a bit and our waiter fetched his guitar and serenaded us all with traditional Italian ballads. This was a great Friday night out and we'll definately be back for more.

I have eaten here twice; once for dinner on a Saturday night and for lunch. Both times every-thing has been fantastic. The owner is charming and gracious, and the waiters are helpful and friendly. Portion sizes are good, flavours and presentation excellent and prices reasonable. For lunch there is an excellent buffet with your choice of foods and portions. Dinner is more formal but the atmosphere is buzzy. An Italian friend recommended this to me as 'the best italian food in Bristol'. I agree!

Cibo run a lunchtime "all you can eat" style buffet (although it is not named as such) with a range of Italian dishes - think of it as a higher class version of a pizzahut buffet. There were one or two pizzas, a few pasta dishes, several salads, a meat dish and a soup when we visited. The food was perfectly pleasant but nothing special, many of the hot dishes had gone cold because, apart from one meat dish and the soup, nothing was kept warm. Service wasn't great, we weren't greeted on entrance and had to sit a while before our order was taken. If you want to try a range of italian dishes instead of just standard pizza and pasta pay a visit for lunch, personally i wouldn't visit for an evening meal based on the food i ate at lunch. The shop does operate a nice deli selling a range of authentic italian ingredients and i would return for that.
