What we say

Situated close to Bath Abbey, Demuths has become something of an institution over the last 20 years, as well as being a hidden gem for honest, additive-free, vegetarian and vegan food. Situated in one of Bath's more interesting Georgian buildings, its décor reflects a positive and innovative attitude towards eating.

This "positively vegetarian" restaurant is everything you always hoped vegetarian food would be but rarely find. The exciting "world food" or "fusion" style makes for exciting flavours and stunning combinations of colour and texture. This is food for anyone who loves to eat.

Open every day for a late breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, menus change monthly with the seasons to ensure that, wherever possible, ingredients are organic and locally sourced.

There is a wealth of unusual and delicious dishes to choose from such as Laotion spring rolls or Cajun tofu brochettes to start with, followed by a sun-dried tomato and feta soufflé or a quinoa and haloumi salad.

Puddings, as well, are generous and unusual, with dishes such as their frangipani seasonal fruit tart or over-the-top gooey chocolate pudding.

Demuths serves excellent organic juices, lassis and shakes and their coffees and teas, as well as their entire wine, beer and spirit list, are organic too. If that doesn't suffice, you can buy a copy of their latest book, Green Seasons Cookbook, and for those interested in learning how to cook the Demuths way, they run The Vegetarian Cookery School in Bath which offers informative and fun cookery courses - for more information see www.vegetariancookeryschool.com.

Went there for lunch a few days ago and was very disappointed!

The food was boring and even inedible at times.

My friend ordered ordered the beans on bread which was nice due to the bread. I ordered the potato dumpling in tomato soup which was bitter and tasteless. Too much cumin seeds and paprika ruined the dish.

For mains we had the Aloo Gobi which was very plain and apart from the fried cauliflower - it was bitter and tasteless - any other curry house would have made it better.

I had the risotto balls with Somerset Brie - if it wasn't for the cheese the dish would be as plain as the desert. The combination of beetroot with the apple jelly just didn't make sense.

We all had high expectations from the place, especially since the restaurant takes pride of winning awards. When we mentioned we were disappointed - the waitress just apologised and didn't offer any refund.

Highly over priced and not worth a penny.

    Stay away !!!

Nestled in the heart of historic Bath, just behind Bath Abbey, Demuths is a delight to any diner searching for exquisite vegetarian and vegan food.

Opened by Rachel Demuth 20 years ago, this well respected restaurant might not be what you’d expect from one serving only vegetarian and vegan fare and organic wines. In 2007 it was voted ‘Best Restaurant in Bath’ and features in the 2008 Good Food Guide.

Head chef Helen Lawrence has a real passion for fresh ingredients and world cuisine, which shows in her

ever-changing menu. Each and every dish offers a unique twist – so if you’re expecting a nut roast, you’ve come to the wrong place!

Try the Indian Thali – a curry lovers dream allowing you to sample eight different Indian delights (£14.95) or if you feel like something a little more local, indulge in the scrumptious Sausage & Mash, with its juicy onion gravy and garlicky greens on the side (£12.50).

The carefully considered wine list offers a rich mix of blends and flavours from around the world, all organic of course, and don’t miss the divine desert menu – the vegan fudge cake is like eating a slice of vegan heaven!

The modern décor creates an airy but intimate atmosphere making it perfect for any occasion – from a family meal to a romantic dinner for two. And to top it all off, the well-informed friendly staff will ensure that, whether you’ve popped in for a quick bite or the full three course menu, your time at Demuths will be a memorable one, even if you’re more Corden Bleu than Cordon Vert.

We have visited Demuths on a number of occasions and the food always delights.

The menu changes regularly and the taste combinations are fascinating. Somewhat expensive for what is all vegetarian food but the food is exquisite.

Service is a little on the slow side the last few times we have been there though they have been day times.

Its a nice enough place but a bit small and poky especially if you have to sit downstairs.

Improving the service and lowering the price will increase the star rating.
