Dating from the early nineteenth century, this traditional pub is close to Bristol's universities and hospitals and attracts inmates of both. Inside there is a snug bar at the front and a warren of intimate spaces behind, all dark wood and subdued lighting, giving a quiet, cosy feel, free of loud music and TVs. People come not only for the range of real ales but also the homemade food, freshly prepared from a daily changed menu (try the very popular home made chilli con carne). Outside there is a wonderful covered and heated enclosed beer garden, a particular draw during the annual street party in August.
