What we say

In the spring of 2001, Birmingham became host to the fourth Hotel du Vin in this much-applauded, award-winning micro-chain. This stunning Victorian building – previously the Birmingham & West Midlands Eye Hospital – is situated in the heart of the "old city" on Church Street, and arranged over five floors, set around a central, open courtyard ideal for alfresco dining.

Internally, the main building has several intriguing features: a heavily-carved staircase, bizarre gargoyles and a double height hall which is almost ecclesiastical in style. These features, and others, have been retained and restored to their former glory.

A relaxing haven in the city, the hotel offers the trademark Bistro, a spa and gym, and has a popular Cellar Bar, all complemented by unique, relaxed hospitality.

Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, the Bistro offers a menu rooted in classic European cuisine with a contemporary edge.

Here you will find "simple classics" that change seasonally, with head chef Nick Turner adding his own selections daily, all supporting their philosophy of using the finest and freshest local produce, cooked simply, priced sensibly.

An extensive and eclectic wine list is a key feature of the hotel. In addition to the main list, which includes an impressive array by the glass, there is a small daily selection of good value wines to complement the menu. Head Sommelier Francois Bourde and his team are always happy to give friendly, knowledgeable advice.

If you wish to eat in a relaxed, tasteful environment, and eat quality food served well, then this is the place for you in Bristol. The dining rooms have a certain shabby chic, and my husband was particularly taken with the cigar room. The outside courtyard was a very pleasant place for aperitifs. The menu had a good selection to choose from, and the wine list is extensive. We were bowled over by our meals, and they seem to do fish particularly well. The food was delicious and servings generous. I recommend the handmade truffles to finish if you can't cope with a dessert course after being so well fed. Service was a bit slow, but we were in no rush and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

During the hustle and bustle of lunchtime you rarely receive anything beyond a standard level of service from a city centre based restaurant. However, following a visit to Hotel Du Vin, I was pleasantly surprised to receive the same level of service at lunchtime that I'd previously enjoyed there on an evening. Although busy, the waiting staff never failed to be anything but attentive and all three courses for the group I was with were delivered in a timely manner. I enjoyed a fishcake starter, followed by steak and ale pie with mash and finishing with a strawberry and lemon posset. The good size portions went down a treat and I, along with the rest of the group welcomed the stroll back to the office in an attempt to walk off this hearty lunch. A very pleasant and highly recommended experience.
