What we say

A family run trattoria near Broadmead, La Grotta offers a rest from from shopping with traditional cosiness and offerings on the menu. Pastas, pizzas, steaks, fish - all cooked with Italian panache by long-serving staff. Even the usually bog-standard spaghetti bolognaise has been made with the same recipe for over 25 years - an antidote to shopping shellshock from the nearby Galleries. The addition of an intimate dance floor downstairs makes for a fine start or finish to a night out as well.

After reading some very positive reviews we decided to give this restaurant a try as myself and my wife love italian food and quaint italian restaurants however we were left very dissapointed.

We had booked in advance but upon arrival we were seated on a table for 2 on our own in the middle of the floor, which didnt feel right at all, it was if they had run out of room and just stuck a spare table there for us which left us feeling awkward. Anyway we got lucky as another couple were leaving so we moved to their vacant table against the wall.

Starters - these were actualy very tasty, I have mussels and the wife had meatballs so no complants so far. Oh and the house red was nice too.

Mains - they took about 20 mins to arrive after our starters but we not too fussed about this. The mains itelf though were not tasty at all. I ordererd the chicken pizza but unfortuantly the pizza was covered in thick cheddar cheese (not mozzereall as statred on the menu which i believe it should be in an italian restanrant). They may have run out of mozzerella but no one explined this to us as the thick chedder cheese made the pizza very sickly indeed and I couldn't finish it.

My wife had an itlalian pasta dish but it was missing some of the main ingrediants and any real taste. There was also a mountain of pasta (enough for 3) but hardly any of the tasty ingrediants such as garlic courgette in the dish itself.

Anyway my wife didn't eat much of her pasta dish and i didn't eat much of my pizza but we still had to wait over half and hour for our plates to be removed, and tables that came in after us were being served more quickly. When the waiter did remove our plates and could clearly see we hadn't eaten much, he didn't bother to ask if everything was ok or rectify the situation but instead just took the full plates away saying nothing.

When we asked for the bil it arrived promptly but we asked the waiter to remove the christmas tip they automatically added to the bill as we felt that adding £6 was a bit cheeky as we like to tip what we feel the waiter/waitress deserves then he proceeded to explain that this is not a tip this is a christmas bonus they put on every customers bill, tip is also optional afterwards.

This for us was the final straw, not only was the waiter being rude but he was basically telling us to tip twice so we asked him to remove this so we could just pay for what we ordered and decided to leave no tip (something we have never done before but we just didnt feel he deserved it). The waiter didn't say thank you for our payment he just walkied off so we left.

Overall we were left very dissapointed as we had high hopes for this restaurant, we thought as it was family run business it would have a real family feel and we would be looked after well. Sadly this was not the case. Who know's on a different day we might have had better service and food but not on this occasion.

I have been eating at la grotto for over 15 years and have never had a bad meal there the same cant be said for other restaurants. The food I can only discribe as lush last night was the same the only thing my fussy partner could fault was the larger my wine was lovely the waiter was great my food was cooked to perfection and I will be back good stuff the best restaurant in Bristol.
