When the first thing you hear, whilst waiting for your table, is a customer who has travelled over 12 miles just for a takeaway, then you know without doubt that good things are to come. Lal Jomi is certainly a well-oiled machine (and we're not talking about the bhunas), recommended by the Good Curry Guide, The Evening Post Academy Awards, and the Master Chef Roll of Honour.
After being seated in your own private booth, with ready and waiting papadoms and imposing pickle tray – the only one in Bristol to include aubergine pickle – it's the time to relax and take in the sumptuous surroundings.
The décor is reminiscent of an Indian prince's boudoir with rich, heavy drapes adorning both ceiling and booths, ornate green marble pillars, and attention to detail everywhere, right down to the gold and mother of pearl condiment sets on your table
The food never fails to impress, with dishes on offer such as the Chef's special, Pabna delight – a medium curry with very tender chicken cooked in a rich tomato sauce, or the sizzling Karai prawn perfectly accompanied by sag aloo. And if by some chance you can manage desert then the baby pineapple or coconut ice cream is the ideal way to finish off a very satisfying evening.
With service and comfort second to none, all headed up by the hospitable owner Mr Miah, it's no wonder Lal Jomi is such a popular venue with MPs, local personalities and regulars from near and (very) far!

poor service

Is this a restaurant with a takeaway attached or a takeaway with an add-on reastaurant? At weekends the latter. You'll wait for 50 minutes for your main course while a stream of waiters carries boxes out to waiting customers. When it arrived the food was the usual good quality. The bill was unreadable and service had been added. (The menu doesn't mention this.) And, the sums were incorrect, in their favour, of course.

How rude!

Came here with visiting family, and the staff were so rude! Not just one of them, but several of them. For example, they got very impatient when we wanted a little more time to choose our order, they were abrupt when we asked for a little more information about one of the dishes, they started clearing plates away before we had finished eating. I could go on...I have never experienced such rudeness in a restuarant, which was disappointing as the food is good and have been here several times before and it was okay. Go up the road to Rajpoot instead - a bit pricier but ten times better.

we visited lal jomi for the first time in a few years and were so disappointed in the service that we will not ever return despite the good food. it was quite slow despite being early, but our main concern was that 2 of the 3 staff who served us were so rude we were taken aback. also a warning for other diners: when we checked the bill at the end, 5 poppadums and the pickle tray came to 8.80! ( a pound each for the poppadums and 3.80 for a pickle tray- if this gets passed to the next table as another diner mentions, they really are making good money on pickle!) service is automatically added to the bill which might explain why staff don't worry about basic politeness!

Average! Average! Average!

What can i say about Lal Jomi, well not much, it is so distinctly average its not worth spending much time on, sounds harsh but its true.
The comment about having to wait in the entrance made by the previous reviewer is correct the restauarant was empty when we went still we were forced to sit in this entrance which is clearly meant for people picking up takeaways, not that there were any of those!
The pickles tray is good, but it is exactly the same one at bombay dreams, which makes me slightly suspiciuos!
All of the food that we ordered was o.k, nothing special tho and really quite bland! This really is a typical 'british' indian, but not in a good way! The food is obviously not freshly prepared and there are no speciality dishes, its just the usual, bhuna, korma, tikka massala, madras etc. nothing to get excited about!
I think if you live close this would be an alright takeaway, but please do not come here for a meal. there are so many better indian restauarants.

Disappointing

Having heard good things about this restaurant located in Redland we thought we would pay a visit. The staff were welcoming but instead of being led to a table on arrival you are seated in the entrance area with a menu, frankly this is uncomfortable and I would have preferred to sit at a table to browse the menu. Starting with the obligitary poppadoms and pickles we were immediately impressed, the pickle tray is intimidating and all of the dips were excellent. One of the main reasons for my negative view of this restaurant is that on finishing our pickle selection was not cleared away to the kitchen, but instead given to the two diners seated next to us. I really hope this was a one off or a mistake and is not common practice. My sizzling lamb dish was spicy and flavoursome though overly salty, something that applied to my partners main and our side dishes too. The rice was nicely cooked and the Bombay potatoes were lovely and would have been perfect with a little less salt. The restaurant is nice with a central dining area and private booths around the edge of the room, sadly we did not get one of these. Reasonably priced and friendly staff but the redistribution of food is unforgivable.
