Originally Malmaison was a brasserie and bar with rooms for guests who came to dine. Ten years later, the brasseries are still a huge draw for locals and overnight guests alike and are the heart and soul of each Malmaison – always buzzy, bustling and friendly. Birmingham Malmaison offers a traditional brasserie dining experience with a modern twist and plenty of charisma.
With traditional grills, brasserie classics and reflective of contemporary tastes Malmaison are serious about wine and passionate about food. Keith, the Head Chef, has nurtured the Mal brasserie for the last ten years and is set up ready for the next ten!
The brasserie has a very individual atmosphere - the beautifully-designed modern interior has plenty of natural light and is full of little pockets of privacy surrounded by walls lined with wine bottles. It also boasts one private dining room and a cellar room, dedicated to wines and Champagne which can also be used for exclusive wine dinners.
The menu features something to suit everyone, with mains such as whole roasted red leg partridge with bread sauce and game chips or whole baked rainbow trout beurre noisette, smoked almonds and raisins. There is also a selection of naturally-reared, grass-fed, dry-aged on-the-bone Scottish steaks, and a fantastic range for vegetarians, including courgette and Gorgonzola risotto, and truffle macaroni cheese with mascarpone cream.

A terrible experience

We went here for a birthday dinner and were completely shocked by the poor quality of the vegetarian and fish dishes and lack of service. The duck was reported as 'good' however that did little to improve our impressions of this place. It seems to be simply an hideously overpriced Wetherspoons with much worse service. A service charge was automatically added and no questions were asked as to why we wanted it removed. A terrible experience.

Birthday treat

I was treated to a birthday meal at this classy restaurant. Me and my husband were met by a warm smile and a good down-to-earth sense of humour. Our Waiter was really helpful and extremely accommodating. He made several recommendations about items on the menu and knew the answers to the questions we posed to him. It was refreshing to have a waiter that was passionate about the food he was serving and knowledgable about how certain dishes have been made. The only minor problem was that i found a hair in my dessert which i informed the waiter of and he apologised profusely for. I was disappointed that the bill was not reduced or a small gesture was not offered to apologise. Other that that, i would definitely go to Malmaison again as the food is delicious and light and doesn't leave you feeling bloated at the end of the meal. For a real foodie like me, it ticks all of the boxes.

A warm welcome awaits

Oozing with contemporary chic, I was surprised to discover that Malmaison offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, quite unlike the aloof and cool I would normally associate with its location - The Mailbox. Malmaison's warmth is epitomised by the red accent colour which is visible throughout the otherwise dark and seductive interior. The occasion was a birthday celebration meal and the evening started off quite promising thanks to the welcoming buzz emanating from the lively Brasserie. However, despite the excellent menu selection and tasty, well portioned dishes, a staff shortage, meant the meal dragged out for almost three hours! Front of house staff were very apologetic, but an average wait of around 40 minutes between courses left an unpleasant taste; and with no one on hand to pour wine this made the meal all the more harder to digest. A number of other guests appeared unhappy with the situation too, which was a shame because overall the atmosphere and food could not be faulted and the staff did try to make the best of a bad situation. Perhaps a return visit will offer a better service experience.

Went with work colleagues and the overall experience was excellent. Food of the highest quality and well served if at times there was an air of pretension in the set up and ambeince'. However the sommelier was very helpful and engaging.
Also a good place to people watch for local personalities - ex Villa managers and BBC presenters and such not exactly Brad and Angelina but a good topic of conversation.
