What we say

A Bento Box is traditionally a light healthy meal beautifully made by a Japanese mother for her school child. Aesthetically appealing - it is prepared as much for the eyes as for the palate.

Now you can experience this special healthy and tasty food for yourself in the heart of Bristol. Housed near the Old Fish market on Baldwin Street, Obento is all about clean lines, minimalist décor and above all quick and tasty Japanese fare.

Colourful dishes include maki - sushi rice wrapped in nori seaweed; nigiri - rice balls with fish; Japanese noodles in soup; and wok-fried dishes with chicken, seafood or vegetables. And, with express lunch from just £6.95, it's great value too.

The venue is ideal for large parties, with long benches catering for up to 20 people at a time. Start your meal with a delicious Japanese cocktail or a flask of traditionally served warm sake. Then browse your way through the diverse menu, which caters for all tastes and is not just about sushi!

This is one of my favourite places to eat in Bristol, and 90% of the time it is fantastic. The food is fresh, the menu varied and reasonably priced and it has a great, relaxed atmosphere. The sushi on offer is the highlight for me though, and far surpasses the sushi served at some of the Japanese chain restaurants we have. On one visit we did find the service a bit unfriendly and the food a little below standard, but this was just one visit of many.

On my most recent visit I opted for the mixed fry bento box. This was a mixture of breaded and fried king prawns, salmon, squid and chicken, which came with rice, Japanese salad, pickles, miso soup and fresh fruit. This was the first time I’d tried the mixed fry, and whilst it was tasty, I did find the breadcrumbs a little heavy, and would probably opt for something lighter in future.

My boyfriend had the Oyako Don rice box- stewed chicken with eggs. We also ordered some vegetable Gyoza as a side. The Oyako Don was lovely- really tender chicken, and the Gyoza were also as mouth-wateringly tasty as always.

It was nice to see a couple with their young daughter here last time we visited- proof that there is something here for everyone!

Been to Obento a few times - the first was great but the last was very expensive - even though it had a 50% sushi offer and it was lunch so weren't eating loads. I wouldn't eat here if it hadn't been for that offer as it seemed so expensive (although I acknowledge sushi is one of the dearer genres of dining). Booked a table for 12pm - turned up and the doors were still closed at 12:10. Sushi was great though - very fresh and tasty. I love the idea of an independant Japanese restaurant but just not enough to return regularly.

I used to love Obento but I've been dissapointed a few times... Had a takeaway most recently and the chicken teriaki was horrid, miso soup and sashimi was good though!

I am a frequent diner at Obento and although the service isn't that great the food is excellent. I always go there hungry, over order because I can't decide what to have and leave extreamly full and satisfied with leftovers for later!!

I recommend Obento to all my friends who love sushi as much as I do. They do an excellent cheap lunch deal as well which is always good. The food arrives quickly so fitting a trip to Obento in your lunch break is easily achievable.

They have an extensive menu which caters to everyones tastes. Even if you are not a raw fish lover you can still enjoy a great meal here!

My wife and I used to be regulars at Obento, but are unlikely to venture back there following our last visit. The food was up to its usual excellent quality, but the service was appalling. It started badly when we had great difficulty requesting a change to one of the set menus, and got worse when we weren't brought the dipping sauces that were supposed to go with various dishes. The waiters were on the whole very sullen and impolite, and we were shocked when one of them came and pointedly told us that the restaurant would be closing at 11:00 - at 10:35!

I believe Obento has recently changed hands and think this must be the reason for the shocking service, as it used to be as perfect as the food.
