What we say

Widely-praised, with good reason, for its unique take on Indian food, Oh! Calcutta! is a breath of fresh air for those who enjoy the cuisine but long for a more modern approach.

The contemporary and relaxed environment is the perfect complement to the unique menu, with unusual touches of flair in the décor creating a vibrant atmosphere.

The menu itself spans both the traditional and the innovative, including some superb fish dishes, regularly changing Chef's specials, and a great range of options for vegetarians, all very reasonably priced.

I've been visiting "Oh Calcutta!" for several years and have always enjoyed great food, drink and a freindly, relaxed atmosphere. The menu is an interesting mix of old favourites together with more unusual dishes you may not have seen or tried before. The staff are very friendly and helpful and will accommodate people's various tastes. Even if you are someone who does not like spicy food, the chefs will prepare you something to cater for your particular taste - just ask!

Whether you are wanting an evening out, enjoy a drink whilst waiting for a takeaway, or are phoning through a delivery the professional staff will provide you with an excellent service. The restaurant has a contempary, modern design which will appeal to both young and old.

    Highly recommended.

I live a few doors away from Oh Calcutta but was busy and didn't see the point in interrupting what I was doing to go and pick the curry up so I asked for delivery (which unfortunately for me they now offer). You would have thought they would have been happy to only have to walk the 30 seconds to drop it off. An hour and half later I have to make a phone call to them in which I was told "the driver is on his way," I will point out if the driver had been on his way he would have been at my door by the time I put the phone down, which he was not. What is more I had to go out anyway and pick it up from outside my house as the driver didn't even bother coming to my door. I then got a snide "you could have picked this up yourself", I could have cooked it myself too but I thought that was the point of a restaurant/takeaway? So I've now got my curry, an hour and a half later, upon opening the bag I find its been bashed about and has spilled out all over everything else in the bag, which was an impressive achievement on its 30 second journey, and even more impressively it was cold! The fish pakoras were soggy, what was left of the battered dhansak was 'blandly fine' and the naan was slightly burnt. If you consider yourself to have functioning taste buds I would advise going to great lengths to avoid, however if you have numbed your taste buds and appreciation of time then it’s the place for you. Good luck!

Have visited many times, the food here is always good, sometime brilliant. The staff are always very friendly, although occationally a little slow. Not a huge fan of the slate table tops which were a little unwelcome when it was minus 5 outside, but other than that I would recomend this place to everyone....

    PS -

-Rice included in the price, so not as costly as it first looks

Very slow service..took 1/2 hour before anyone came...then another 1/2 hour before the starters arrived..we had to ask for the poppadoms..some of the main meals were cold..the restaurant was so cold we had to keep our coats on all night.. We will not be going back.

Oh Calcutta is always busy so they must be doing something right but on our visit we were ignored by waiting staff and left trying to place our order for over 30 minutes so that the couple who arrived 20 minutes after us had received their food before we had even ordered. There was then no apology and our food took a long time to arrive once we had ordered. The food itself was nice but nothing I couldn't have enjoyed elsewhere and having to wait so long took the enjoyment out of it. We won't be going back again.

It is the perfect venue for a low-key celebration meal with its fresh take on an Indian restaurant - its exposed pipes and a Bollywood movie-medley screened silently behind the bar.

I chose fish curry, and approved its authentic tastes, while everyone praised their dishes. The staff could not have been more friendly.

I love this place and will return.

It wasn´t my first time in Oh Calcutta and even though is not my favourite indian restaurant in Bristol, I used to quite enjoy eating there... Not the last time, it took them ages to take the orders, to bring the drinks, the food, everything was painfully slow. We felt as if we needed to remind them we were there every 20 minutes, otherwise we might still be there waiting for our food. When the food arrived it wasn´t hot enough and the dishes were not as tasty as we expected... Very disappointing...

I think Oh Calcutta must be one of Bristol's finest Indian restaurants.

Not only is it nice to see an Indian restaurant that isn't all chinzy and slightly tired, it's great to enjoy such a fusion of foods come together with a fantastic ambience.

With the back drop of the silent Bollywood movies set to an ecclectic mix of contemporary Indian tunes, dishes come out lovingly presented with the staff being very helpful at all times and happy to guide you if you're not sure what to choose.

Tender juicy chicken pieces; perfectly cooked rice and sauces that get the taste buds tingling. Perfection.

I'm not the worlds biggest fan of the traditional 'anglosised curry' (aka meat and sauce) but this place is amazing! Lots of different options that feel a little more authentic than the average. The sides are wicked and could almost make a meal in themselves. Highly recommended.

I went to Oh! Calcutta last bank holiday. I have been many times over the last eyar or so, and loved the food, especially the specials, like the Afgan Lamb. Unfortunately, the day I came the service was a bit lacking, it took ages to get our order, get the meals out and even trying to pay. The staff were friendly, but seemed a bit distracted and forgot us a lot. Having said that, the food as usual was top noth and I hope that they were having an off day that day
