In 1965, an English eccentric entrepreneur by the name of Peter Boizot changed the face of British dining forever. He teamed up with Enzo Apicella, a fiery Italian designer, to create a new type of restaurant that shattered the mould and rewrote the rule book.
Out went the dull food, lacklustre interiors and indifferent service that were the standards of the day. In came a vivid, passionate approach to dining thanks to the synergy of cultures from the two very different men - Italian flair and panache coupled with the very best of English creativity and idiosyncrasy. Pizza Express was born, bringing the true tastes of Italy to the British high street.
Now, more than 40 years and 320 restaurants after the first Pizza Express opened in Soho, the restaurant is firmly established at the very heart of British life, providing the freshest food and the warmest welcome whoever the customer and whatever the occasion. The secret of their success is the same now as it always has been - a passion for pizza, a love of people and a relaxed but sophisticated atmosphere.
The very best ingredients, imaginative recipes and innovative menus have ensured a devoted following among customers for decades. Along with the fabulous range of pizzas sit imaginative salads and classic pasta dishes. There is plenty for vegetarians, vegans, even those with nut allergies are catered for, and children can enjoy a 3-course meal from the Piccolo menu for only £5.25.
And, after searching Italy's finest vineyards, the resident Master of Wine - one of a small group renowned worldwide for their skills - has assembled an impressive wine list that complements the recipes perfectly.

Great food, venue lacking...

Using our 241 invitations dining card we knocked a few pennies of the final bill. Near the underground car park, it was a handy place to stop and eat before diving home.
Food was great. Low calorie pizza with salad made the whole meal easier to stomach. Coffee and small pudding excellent!
Ambience – not sure about. With all the glass and despite a double door, cold air coming in making the place chilly. Our first waitress served us and promptly left – this causing a bit of a kerfuffle at the end with our card, as the second waitress knew nothing about it. We waited ages at the end for our bill as the place got busy.
Acoustics terrible!! Could barely hear my partner on the other side of the table. Spent a lot of the evening repeating my self and having to raise my voice to be heard. Might go to a pizza express again – but not this branch.

Thought we'd show the Dublin visators the sites of Bristol and take in Harbourside. With a kid in tow, Pizza Express seemed an easy option and with the Platinum card offering 241 pizzas, this cemented the deal. However pizza express's new harbourside venue has got some catching up to do to match the other sites. Firstly, they had no 7up or Sprite so we ordered vodka and lemonade for the non-wine drinker. Then we were informed they'd run out of vodka with no other option, so when we finally decided on an alternative, they'd run out of ice!! It wasn't even that busy! Our pizza's were fine but we had to pay up and go far earlier than planned so we could actually go somewhere to get a drink. Will stick with the Clifton branches in the future.
