Occupying a prime location in Clifton Village at the end of the old shopping arcade, Primrose Cafe has earned a reputation among diners for good local bistro style food and ambience. Arranged over several floors, this busy restaurant can usually offer a cosy table all year round, with tables spilling out onto the picturesque street which is a great suntrap in the summer. The place is great for meeting up with friends over coffee and croissants. The Café sits at the entrance of a fantastic Victorian arcade which is well worth a visit in its own right but if it's food you're after, proprietors Patrick and Sue Glennie-Smith have a well-earned reputation for their classic bistro dishes, innovative salads and home-made cakes and puddings.

Golden Glow From The Primrose

I love this place. The ambience is perfect in the evenings if you're going for a romantic meal. And the staff are friendly and helpful without being overbearing.
They're down with the Slow Food movement but it doesn't mean you're waiting long. And just in case you're already peckish, there's a basket of their sourdough bread to start with real butter.
We started with razor clams - a first for both of us. They were long and rather rubbery. But then, that's what clams are like. Not sure if you could do much to make them better. And it was difficult splitting the third in half. The sauce was tasty though..
For mains I had monkfish and my partner the halibut. Both were delicious. My monkfish had an anchovy crust and was on sauteed cavalo nero. I didn't get to try much of the halibut - he virtually inhaled it.
We couldn't resist the fat chips but fear they were one step to far. The side of veg was delicious though - chunky carrots, brocolli and runner beans. I like it when restaurants show care for each and every ingredient...
And finally, for me - a glass of dessert wine, delicious. For him, summer pudding with clotted cream brulee, which was an absolute triumph. Often summer pudding is tart - this had the perfect balance, particularly when offset by the cream.

Great Bistro Food

At night Primrose cafe transforms into a Bistro offering great food soucred from free range and organic sources. The menu is reassuringly small but really spoils you for choice and it can be a difficult decision choosing your meal, luckily complimentary olives are on hand to so you can graze whilst your decide.
Once you have ordered you are presented with a complimentary appetizer, on our visit this was rose, artichoke and truffle soup served in a minnature espresso cup. This was pretty close to soup perfection.
I opted for the duck confit with puy lentil salad - fantastic. Succulent, tasty duck with strips of perfectly crispy duck skin complimented by a small salad of lentils. For my main I chose the roast cod chorizo, tomato and butter beans from the specials board. Perfectly soft melt-in-the-mouth cod with a rich tomato and chorizo sauce. My only minor complaint is the butter beans could have been a little softer but overall the food really was excellent.
Service was friendly and relaxed but without being slow, though it can be a little confusing on arrival as it is not really clear where you should wait to be seated as once you walk in you are standing in the middle of the dining room.
Two courses for two with a bottle of Riesling came in at around £70. Don't be deceived by Primrose being a cafe by day - the food served at night really is worth visiting for.

Primrose Cafe from the outside appears a pretty, quite quaint establishment. However, just on the fact that the place appears (and is) always packed reflects the standards of the place. The cakes are sublime! Lunch is additionally a wonderful experience- I enjoyed a steak sandwich that was perhaps the best I've ever experienced. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and this is my favourite pick in Clifton!
