The Raj has been serving fine curries to the more discerning Bristolians since January 1981 from the basement of a lovely grade 2 listed building in King Street in Bristol’s Theatre heartland. The restaurant has a warm and well-thought-out décor with an equally warm welcome from friendly staff who have a deep knowledge of the cuisine they serve.
The Raj has an extensive menu of the finest Indian fayre prepared to order by a dedicated team of enthusiastic Chefs headed by Bodrul Khan who will not allow any artificial colourings, preservatives or flavourings across the threshold of his kitchen and insists on only the finest ingredients for his gastronomic creations. Bodrul has a belief in creating real traditional Indian dishes prepared as he learned from his mentor in his native homeland of Sunamgonj in Bangladesh.
Hasan Ahmed inherited the business from his father, Feroze, who opened Bristol’s first Indian restaurant in 1959. Hasan has followed is father’s philosophy of producing first class food with the best service at a sensible price. Hasan often takes customers to see the traditional Tandoori clay oven in the kitchen, comfortable that there is never anything, anywhere in his premises he would want hidden.

I visited this restaurant after finding the offer in the Invitaion Book and seeing a positive review from Clifton Life on the restaurant's website. The restaurant was busy for a Wednesday evening, the tables are not well spaced so other diners are very close to you.
The menu offers nothing other than standard curry house fayre for staters and mains and prices for a main with rice avergae at around ten pound.
The Rashmi kebab had little flavour and felt very much like day old food reheated. The lamb sag palak was little more than lamb and wilted spinach. Portion sizes were reasonable but the food was very uninspiring. My friend's rezzala tasted of literally nothing but chilli and was quite unpleasant.
Service was awful, we were left loitering around teh main entrance waiting to be seated for longer than acceptable, and once we had finished we waited more than twenty minutes for the plates to be cleared and further delays for the bill. It is beyond me how this place as recieved positve reviews from publications such as Clifton LIfe.
Skip this place, head across to other side of King Street and go to Myristica - it is far far better.

Me and my partner decided to indulge in yet another indian meal out and this time we choose raj tandoori, and how very dissapointed we were, especially as it is facing one of the greatest curry houses in bristol, if not in the country, Myristica!
When you walk down to the restaurant it feels slightly cheap and underwhelming, however the decor was plesant and vibrant.
We were welcomed by friendly staff and shown to our seat, however the good service ended there. For the rest of the night we were virtually ignored and the staff were messing around the entire evening, they honestly seemed like they didnt want to be there.
We were also sat on a table that was stuck so far out i thought the waiters were going to shoulder barge me everytime they walked by.
I have to agree with the last reviewer aswel, with regards to the food. The main courses were strangely bland, a slight spice, but no taste. The starters were also poor, stale cold onion bhajee with a limp salad and tough chicken tikka pieces. The choice of desserts were the usual frozen pathetic offerings.
Overall the evening was very dissapointing, poor service and poor food!
We had 25% off with the invitation book but this didnt make a difference i would return even if i had 75% off!
Please please dont take a step in here, turn around, walk across the street and walk into Myristica, it is easily a million times better, trust me!!

This place was once a regular haunt of mine, however my last two visits have been rather average.
The food was indeed hot and quite tasty, but also strangely bland. The service was fast yet quite impersonal. It was not a busy night and I think the staff were more interested in heading home than serving us.
The atmosphere was also strangely lacking!
I'll be back to Myristica next time.
