What we say

The Ahmed family have been running a restaurant in the region for over 40 years when they opened in Bath and the Bristol venture follows their distinctive approach of taking favourite Indian dishes but giving it a healthy, lighter twist - the menu features a page of healthy dishes. The chef uses lean meat, low-fat dairy products, reduced fat and sugar but still packs a punch when it comes to flavour. For reasonable prices you get high quality Indian cuisine that's considerably better for you than many takeaways (incidentally the place does offer a rather handy takeaway service). The home made bread is fantastic, which is always a good sign. The Chicken or Lamb Tikka Makhanwalla is recommended by the chef.

I've been wanting to try this place for quite a while, the small hut at the end of Queen's road always looked it like it had character. The menu outside offers nothing particularly special but the food served up is pretty good. We decided on the set menu, not a normal approach but neither of us were feeling particularly decisive and it turned out to be a good way to try a variety of dishes.

The poppadums were midly disappointing, they had a particularly shop bought taste to them but the pickle ray was interesting enough with a tamarind sauce amongst the usual suspects of mango, lime and onion dips.

The chicken tikka pieces and lamb kebab starter were good, the chicken was succulent and the dressing was lovely. The lamb nicely spiced but a little dry on its own. Three curries arrived for the main including a chicken dansak - a first for me but was full of flavour with sweet and sour punch, a minor complaint here is the chicken was slightly too dry. The lamb bhuna was simply delicious, soft well cooked lamb in a really rich well spiced gravy and was my favourite dish of the night. The accompanying vegetable curry was uninspiring, the potato was undercooked as were several of the large chunks of carrot, this is also the first time in my life i have ever come across a brussel sprout in a vegeable curry. For £32 there was a huge amount of food, these three curries were served up with two large dishes of rice (suffered from being made for slightly too long) but was nice enough, a sag aloo and naan.

The standard Indian beers are on offer - draught Kingfisher and bottled Cobra and the service was disticntly average. Overall, nothing particularly special but worth a visit if you are in the area.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this restaurant, since the prices were so low. However, I enjoyed a delicious meal here - the vegetarian options are especially good. Service was decent - though the servers were a little brusque with our group, I attributed it to being swamped with students most days. Overall, I would return again.
