A classic family-run Italian restaurant up at the top of Whiteladies Road which ignores modern interior faddishness in favour of a traditional look and feel. All those traditional Italian ingredients are here, from the breadsticks, pasta and seventeen types of pizza to the tiramisu and, with generous portions, excellent prices (particularly the three-course lunch) and attentive, not obsequious, service, Renato's boasts a loyal local clientele. It's a good choice either for your romantic 'diner a deux' or family occasion and won't break the bank.

I used to visit here often when I lived in the area, last time was 2006 I think but it seems to have gone sharply downhill - either that or the KP was doing the cooking this visit.
Actual pizza base was good but everything else slightly disastrous! Mine should have had anchovies & didn't - waitress took it back, came back with it & said 'sorry we've run out'. I asked to have some tuna thrown on then instead - off she goes with it again, then comes back with some anchovies that had magically appeared.... well one tiny fillet cut into small pieces & scattered on top. My pizza was not exactly warm after all this but I ate the darn thing, I was famished!
Another friend played Hunt the Ham in his calzone - he only managed to find 3 small pieces. Ordered a side of whitebait which was very poor indeed, tasted like cheap fish goujons more - dreadful for £6. Also dreadful was the tomato & red onion salad - rings of thick cut onion plus just plain slices of tomato, no dressing, no nothing.
We were one of only 2 tables, both of 4 people, heaven only knows what would happen in a rush! The other table were experiencing problems too - service was a pretty sad affair. Left feeling rather embarrassed since it was me that recommended the place; 'Never Again' we all said - what a shame.

Decent quality Italian food

Until i recieved the new invitation book with a 25% discount for Numero Uno i would not have considered visiting. It does not look particularly appealing from outside, but I read some reviews and it had received praise for its neighbourhood Italian style so we decided to try it out.
The restaurant is bring your own which significantly reduces your bill although they do apparently offer litre carrafes for around ten pounds. The main courses vary between £8 and £20 and include an offering of pasta, pizza, chicken, fish and veal.
Service wasn't great, when we first arrived we were waved to a table and sat for a while without service but it improved throughout the evening and our waiter was friendly.
The antipasti starter and bruschetta were very nice and a good portion size for a starter. The ingredients tasted very fresh and delivered nice clean flavours.
The lamb shank in a rosemary sauce was the special of the day and was excellent, perfectly rare and the soft meat fell easily from the bone. The rosemary sauce was rich and tasty without overpowering the lamb. This was served with a side of pasta made on the premises.
The Tiramisu was clearly homemade, it was rich and soft and had a very good dose of amaretto.
Without the discount it came in at just under £50 including corkage and service. Don't let the appearance of this restaurant put you off, the food is good quality and well cooked.

We would like to share our experience of this restaurant with other readers:
I have visited the vast majority of restaurants in Bristol and can honestly say that overall, Renato's ranks amongst the very best!
My partner and I were both very impressed, not just by the food, but by the service and atmsophere too.
The delicious specials conjured up by Mr Fucci himself are a delight not to missed!
Go there and see for yourself...
Kind regards,
Mr J Attby, Redland.
