What we say

Occupying the ground floor of a plum Bristol Dock location, Riverstation café must have one of the most stunning outdoor eating and drinking spaces in the UK. Set to the rear of the acclaimed Riverstation building, the inside seating is open and modern with planar glass windows, marble and stainless steel underscoring the sharp, contemporary feel. Windows open on to the decked waterside terrace while inside, the semi-open kitchen is a permanent culinary theatre.

The menu is a mix of modern European dishes and tapas and local seasonal food. As you would expect, the wine selection is great and there is a good choice of beers, lagers and cider. No walk around Bristol Docks is complete without a visit to the Riverstation café terrace.

On booking requested window seat , told non available but a 'good view' would be provided - if this means a table bang in the middle of the room then I am totally satisfied. The starter was small, bland and unbalanced with the sauce totally overpowering the scallops and the crispy pancetta ungenerous to say the least . My pregnant partner had leak and potato soup as all other choices were out of her present diet requirements.

As for main course I had steak and chips , a few years back we had this here and it was top notch this time not so , my requested medium rare was 1/2 steak totally rare 1/2 steak medium - with a frozen butter topping - not good ! The salad was undressed and the chips were nothing special for the £20 price.

Aside from a passable Crete brûlée we decided to leave it there - happy anniversary meal - oh and then we were over charged 2 puddings that we caught on the bill and then expected to tip.

I would say avoid unti it improves !!

I hardly ever review restaurants but really felt the need to let people know about the Riverstation. My friends and I attended for a very special occasion and were sat at a table over looking the street not the river. The seats were different from the rest in the restaurant, small and very uncomfortable. It was clear from the start they wanted us in and out as quick as possible. To top this the waitress had the cheek to ask us not to laugh so loud at one point. I'm sure laughter and sound of enjoyment is something you would want on the restaurant floor. The food was dry, clearly rushed and I'm referring to every dish that cam out. I would highly recommend avoiding this restaurant at all cost. I have never been so disappointed in any food establishment in my life. I would rather go to a fast food restaurant.

I went to the Riverstation with my family for a birthday celebration. The menu was varied and interesting and they offered a special saver menu to for those on a tighter budget.

We sat at a table overlooking the river and could watch the rowers and boaters going about their business which made for a lovely setting.

The food was cooked extremely well, the portions were generous without being excessive and the waiting staff were attentive right up until we had finished the dessert, trying to get the bill was a little harder than it should have been.

I had a terrine for starter which was one of the best I've had in years followed by guineafowl with cheesecake for pud.

I would, and will, happily return to the Riverstation in the future.

Our group arrived at this pleasant riverside location in dribs and drabs and the number in our party changed in view of a miscalculation on our part. We even had a someone arrive quite late but this was all handled well and in good spirit by the service staff.

The positive impression of the staff continued later when one of the waiters was asked a number of questions and was particularly friendly and helpful, something that isn't always the case in similar restaurants.

We decided to opt for just two courses as we were planning to continue the evening drinking elsewhere and I went for the potted smoked salmon rillette with dill, lemon + toasted granary bread which was particularly tasty and not too filling.

Although steak, seabass and duck, all big favourites of mine, were on the menu I decided to select the braised belly of Lincolnshire pork with, greens, apple compote + cider jus as my main course. Although it is a food cliche the pork belly melted in the mouth. I had never tried it before and was a little apprehensive of how the fat would taste. However it was extremely flavoursome and this was without doubt one of the best dishes I've had in years.

Speaking to the rest of the group they were all were similarly impressed with the dishes they had selected with the breast of English duck with spiced red cabbage, chestnuts + rosemary jus receiving the highest praise.

In conclusion the Riverstation is pleasant location, with friendly helpful staff and great food. It is certainly not the cheapest place to dine and often the menu seems a little fancy or contrived for my tastes but I would have no hesitation in returning or recommending it.

Two of us enjoyed a fantastic meal in this sparkly contemporary restaurant, this place serves the posh food you see on tv but never get to eat. The staff are smiling, attentive, happy and know all about the food on the menu, and the well chosen wine list. We had Starter: Scallops, mmmm. Pate; Delicious. Mains: Steak, wow this place could do a Blk&bleu;perfectly, tasty, juicy, tender. Stuffed Rabbit loin, sweet and delicate and amazing. The food was so professionally and prettily presented, it was perfect portion control, allowing you to have a 3 course dinner without feeling hungry or stuffed to bursting point! Wonderful. We decided to go back every week until we've exhausted the menu!

OK - I admit I mainly have cocktails and whisky here on my way back from other (cheaper) meals but you've got to love the impeccable staff, chilled out surroundings and value for money bistro/bar at the bottom which lets you enjoy being part of the scene whilst not re-mortgaging your house. Maintains its high standards (unlike Severnshed next door).

My friend and i decided to visit this restaurant for Sunday Lunch back in June.

When we arrived at the restaurant there was a waiting list so we went outside with a bottle of wine. Luckily the weather was lovely and sat outside overlooking the water with some wine was a good start for a Sunday lunchtime. We did have to wait about 45 mins for a table though.

However, the sunday roast was lovely. Very tasty and a slightly different option to your average Pub Lunch.

I haven't been back for an evening meal but i don't have a bad word to say about this restaurant and so i'm sur i will revisit it.

Visted fairly on (7pm) on a Friday night...relatively quiet, so shown straight to our table which we had booked. Service was swift, with bread (various 'flavours' ) and drinks offered straigt away. Went for the special menu, which turned out to be good value, prseneted well and tasted great...including ham hock based terrine to start with. Would definitely go again

we ate here last Saturday night - it was apparent as soon as we arrived (8.45pm) that something was amiss, and apparently a serious IT problem had stuffed up the ordering system in the kitchen. Far worse than the delay in getting served, however, was the overbearing, obnoxious behaviour of the bloke on the next table, whose policy was to complain loudly and vigourously to get as big a discount as he could. The staff capitulated easily (way too easily) which only encouraged him, and he was egging on everyone else. However he was raving about the quality of the food! We thought the food was superb, and the delay did not marr our evening. We felt for the staff who were clearly having a dreadful time and were managing really well under the circumstances. The manager ended up offering us our mains for free which we were really pleased with, natch! A shame for Riverstation which in my opinion has really upped its game lately.

The design is pretty stunning, the food very decent with modern, innovative dishes but it is the location that really sells this place for me. Right on the waterfront- the name gives it away. The only thing I'd say is it may be a bit modern for some tastes and some may find it a little clinical. BUT if it's good food and a pleasant view, this is a good choice

Had a very enjoyable birthday lunch at the riverstation. I started with a lovely risotto with asparagus and pea, followed by pollock and crushed potatoes, ending in mixed berry mess. We combined this with a lovely bottle of Taittinger Champagne and Sancerre which sufficiently whet the palate! Shame I had to return to work afterwards! The food was exceedingly enjoyable although I would have liked more meringue in the mess and the service was good. At lunchtime it did feel very "business-like" but nevertheless I would definitely go again.
