I enjoyed a pleasant evening with friend. Service took a little time due to it being very busy.

Lovely atmosphere good range of food.

I went for lunch yesterday to the Rose and Crown. The first thing that hits you (other than the low ceilings) as you walk in is how lovely it is to step into an unspoilt country pub which has escaped commercialisation.

We were made aware at the time of placing our order that there was a half hour wait for food. Never a problem to me as long as I'm informed of this and not left to wonder where my food is, so they scored well there.

The menu can only be described as plentiful. On top of the main menu, which seems to list every dish known to man there is also a Daily Specials menu.

I wasn't sure what to expect from my Wensleydale Cheese Pie. It arrived in an individual pot and was good to see that it was obviously home baked as opposed to mass produced and bought in. The pastry was light and crisp, the filling rich and creamy. What spoilt it was the luke warm serving of rosted veg and the salad that accompanied it. To be fair the veg was tastey if somewhat underheated. I would have sent it back if I wasn't so pushed for time and I have no doubt that the friendly staff would have happily replaced it.

I will be going back as the ambience and the cheeriness of the staff far out weighed a portion of under par veg!

The country pub is warm and inviting. The staff are friendly. The menu has a large choice, with freshly prepared dishes and a number of specials. The prices are reasonable, plus they also have a special offer menu Monday - Thursday, offering two courses for £10, or three for £12. I would recommend this pub as a good country retreat, in a listed building,
