The Royal Raj in Winterbourne prides itself on offering a truly enjoyable dining experience with outstanding service and authentic pan-Indian cuisine. Their Chefs have been mastering their art for over 50 years. More recently, and possibly in light of an increasing demand for healthy food and lifestyle, Royal Raj offers a selection of the finest Indian dishes with a lower salt and fat content but without compromising on taste.
Unusually housed in a former Gloucestershire stone inn, Royal Raj exudes the same homely welcome one would expect from a good local.
Past visitors' comments written in the book also suggest that this is a place people return to time and time again. Manager Sohail and his team treat every customer like a VIP ensuring neither your glass nor your plate is ever empty!
Inside, a series of different rooms run into one another and range in size from the grand first floor dining room, ideal for a party, to cosy corners for more intimate gatherings. Many authentic voile hangings and hand-stitched tapestries adorn the walls, while ornate metal lanterns and brass vessels are placed throughout. Painted camel-skin and ironwork screens separate some of the tables.
Seated at the tables with authentic brass tablewear and gold linen napkins, you can relax on the very comfortable roll-back chairs whilst enjoying the sumptuous surroundings and attentive service.
Tandoori mixed kebab makes an ideal starter as does the prawn purée. Mains run to the likes of tandoori mix grill with chicken and lamb tikka, sheesh kebab and tandoori chicken; hot and sweet dansak; or tandoori king prawns. Desserts include Volcano - tasty cinnamon ice cream; or Kulfi - traditional Indian pistachio or almond ice cream.
To top off the whole evening, a rose is given to every lady!

what a head waiter

We used to visit this local restaurant on a regular basis but feel that with the less presence of old manager service standards are going down, head waiter now seems to be in control of the operation but regret to say that not a pleasant person at all, over friendly to some and very arrogant to others ( this is not only our view other locals also think the same) always seems to be in a rush all the time even when only a few other guests sitting. I must say whenever we are there on a sunday things look very different and calm. waiter who takes our order is very polite and caring and honestly feel that with the supervision of the manager this young boy should be given more chance to be in front and I am sure this can definitely benefit the business and may bring us and others back. Good luck Royal Raj

Four of us ate at this restaurant and enjoyed every mouthful. I was on a special diet and they cooked the meal with no fat for me, I was very impressed. Service was good.

I like to give credit when it's due but am unfortunately unable to find much to credit this restaurant with other than the furnishings.
I went there recently and was kept waiting for over an hour for 3 meals which upon arrival were wrong and the side dishes were missing. Upon mentioning this, it was obvious that the waiter was fully aware of the error but had decided to wait to see if we noticed! The taste of the food was lacking and the dishes were all quite oily. The Nan was very dry and £1.50 for a small roti was quite extortionate. The best part of the meal was the papadoms!
The final bitter pill came when the bill arrived - we were severley overcharged for drinks with little explanation...

The Royal Raj, is a restaurant set in n old pub, so the atmosphere is quite cosy and there are lots of little areas to sit.
They get booked quite quickly as they are very popular with locals.
We go there whenever we can, the food is lovely, it is always served hot as they place the dish on a gas burner on the trolley before giving it to you so food id always piping hot.
I have tried a varirty of dishes and have liked every one of them, i cant fault the food or the service there.
Also at the end of he evening the ladies are presented with a rose, which is a nice touch to end a lovely evening
