Enjoy dining at the oldest house in Bath (built 1482), where meals are still served in the Trencher tradition.
The evening menu requires a little explanation! Traditionally, a type of bread - known as Trencher - was used before the invention of plates. Unlike plates (invented around 1500), the Trencher bread gets its flavour from the food and is eaten as part of the meal.
The use of Trencher breads remained popular in Georgian England - perhaps the most famous of all being the Sally Lunn Bun, enjoyed here at Sally Lunn's House for over 300 years. The historic menu offers main courses served in the Trencher tradition with a generous slice of Sally Lunn Bun. All include the day's selection of fresh vegetables and a plate!

This used to be our favorite restaurant in England, but when we went to it recently, we were a little disappointed. Both my wife and I ordered full means, expecting that they would include the famous bun, but they didn't. We each had our meal placed on a little piece of ordinary toast. We were pretty disappointed.

Sally Lunn's is a typical tourist destination and one not to be missed when visiting Bath- Don't dismiss though as there is really nothing like a Sally Lunn bun! The Welsh rarebit is a personal favourite for lunch but equally pop in if you fancy something lighter (chocolate bun is great for mid morning snack!). Bit of a squeeze inside but worth it! One note of advice- sit upstairs. It's nicer.
