What we say

Italians to the left of you, Italians to the right of you and not just because of the spectacular mirrored interior either: directors, management, chefs, waiters…in fact, tutti, seem to have fetched up their gondolas in Bristol. This is no theme restaurant. Its very essence is Italian. The food is all cooked from fresh so you sometimes have a bit of a wait. There is an enormous a la carte menu and lots of specials, particularly fish. Some have found the prices at the top end of acceptable but, if you want Italian without the clichés, then here's where you come.

Myself and 4 old school friends we are well into our 40's! ame to visit a friend in Bristol she was very excited about taking us here. When we arrived we were shown to our table, I popped to the loo, and on my return the waiter was waiting to take my order! I asked for a few minutes where he stood to the side and waited! Our meals arrived and they were very nice, whilst 3 had finished and 2 still eating our plated were taken and we were asked if we wanted deserts & coffee! After again being asked to wait, when our deserts again were fine, we declined coffee, as we by then had 3 waiters cleaning our table! A real shame as our friend was embarrassed.

What can I say? The staff are arrogant and the food is unimaginative, old fashioned, overpriced and tasteless. Think prawn cocktail served in an iceberg lettuce leaf with a cherry on the top - this place seriously needs to move out of the 1970s. Give this place a wide berth - there are plenty of quality Italian restaurants in Bristol, but this is definitely not one of them.

I wanted to come on here as I always use this website when looking for new restaurants to visit, so hoping to pass on my knowledge and experience! There are very few restaurants worth returning to, but San Carlo is definitely one of them. The food is consistently good, they constantly adapt and update their menus and the serving staff are always friendly and clued-up if you have any menu/wine/specials related questions. I don’t think I could give more of a glowing review, highly recommended.

Me and my partner adore eating out, and this was one of the first restaurants that we visited in Bristol over 3 years ago! Since then we have been back on several occassions, including 21st birthdays, it truly is a special restaurant!

The food is of the highest quality, whether it be fish, pasta, pizza, steak all of it is beautiful! highly recommended comes the snails they are glorious and the best mussels i have ever had! Also the pizzas must be the best outside of Italy, they are stunning!!

The surroundings are also beautiful, which creates and exquisite ambience.

The wine list is also extensive, the chianti is absolutley divine! The only failings of this lovely restaurant are the slightly touchy, almost rude, albeit attentive waiting staff. Also the desserts seem to fall slightly short of the incredibly high standards that are set during the first and second courses.

Overall San Carlos is a great great restaurant, time and time it delivers amazing food at a great price! If you havent been, go now, it wont dissapoint!

Lovely setting and fantastic service - just a shame about the quality of food! My partner & I had different starters and mains but the pasta sauce for both dishes was the same - an orange thick gue ! For £17 per head we expected a little more.

San Carlo has been around for quite a while and It's a place which is always on my "preferred" list of places to go in Bristol. It's expensive for an Italian but 9 times out of 10 the food is awesome. I would definitely recommend the Calamari (the best I have tasted in Bristol). I love the ambience with the mirrors and there is also a really nice Rose (I forget the name) Overall, if you live in Bristol and have not been here, you are missing out.
