Shanghai 30‘s is no ordinary Chinese restaurant, and what it offers customers is no ordinary dining experience. Taking its name from decadent 1930's Shanghai, a place of shows, restaurants, clubs and entertainment to which people from all over the world came to party, Shanghai 30's celebrates the gourmet melting pot that came out of the era.
Situated in a beautiful 15th century building, Shanghai 30’s cuisine is based on classic and contemporary dishes of Shanghai and the surrounding areas of Shaoxing and Yangchow, as well as some of the most popular dishes from Sichuan, Peking and Canton. The menu changes seasonally and ingredients are fresh and carefully sourced. With the taste and style of west cuisine meets east, Shanghai cuisine is an eclectic blend of sweet and sour sauces, spices and fresh ingredients. A selection of chicken, duck, pork and beef dishes carefully balance succulent meat with authentic sauces and oriental spices to create delicate flavours and aromas. Top marks go to the five spices and honey marinated chicken, and to the crispy beef served with chef’s special berry sauce. There’s a fantastic vegetarian selection including the incredibly flavoursome dry wok sautéed green beans, and sautéed celery and cashew nuts served in a crispy fried noodle basket. True to native Shanghai the restaurant boasts an impressive seafood selection including sea bass in ginger and spring onion and sizzling platters of seafood.
The interior of Shanghai 30’s is striking. Polite and affable waiters bustle around the decadent and richly decorated interior. Mock antique banqueting furniture and heavy drapes in decadent reds and golds hang from the wooden walls, giving the restaurant an opulent regal air. Deep red lanterns give off a warm lighting and oriental curiosities create a cosy vibe.
Providing customers with a thrilling dining and cultural experience, Shanghai is a must for all lovers of authentic Chinese cuisine, and it is no wonder that it is the proud winner of the Remy Martin 2008 award.
