Tired, run down, listless, this was perfidious Albion before its transformation in 2005 from tired old boozer to modern gastropub. Now it's one of the great and good on the Bristol munching circuit and, as befits its name ("Albion" is the most ancient name for Great Britain), it concentrates on modern British cuisine using locally grown and reared West Country produce. Everything used on the daily-changing menu (which includes a deli and quality Sunday roast) is as local as possible. Grade II listed, courtyard and, most telling of all, private dining rooms: The Albion is now truly a reformed character.

Best food in Clifton

I booked The Albion for my husband's 40th birthday and we weren't dissapointed. I've eaten here a few times with girlfriends as the menu suits me - there's always something unusual to try. This is not the cheapest place to eat out, but it sure beats any other eatery I know in Clifton at similar prices.
Pretty location, lovely decor, and there's a smart outside patio (I'm a smoker) where you'll chat to locals. This is a popular spot, so you may need to book for a group.
Oh, and I have never eaten anything raw there - I like my meat medium-rare anyway! But I'm sure you can ask for something to be well done. I tend to order fish on their menu anyway as I know it's sourced locally and fresh. Simple food, not poncey, friendly staff, perfect for a ladies lunch.

We went on a Friday night in a group of five looking forward to something we had not tried before. Unfortunately the service was not very quick, we had dirty glasses, the mussels were not cleaned and the grouse was raw. For the prices charged we were expecting something amazing, but overall it was rather average. They did give us the money off for the food we could not eat, but overall we left with an unsatisfied feeling and will probably not go back. (toilets not very clean either).

We have just had Sunday lunch at The Albion and they really should state on their menu
what you are actually getting. We did not choose the beef because it said overnight roast forerib of beef,
this is a cheep cut of meet, we chose instead the roast herefordshire pork, what we actually got was a big
lump of belly pork that was 90% fat for £15.50. this is a very cheap cut of meat and if I had known what it
was would not have ordered it. We did mention this at the time of paying and were told that we should have
mentioned it earlier, then they could have given us the beef, but as stated we did not want the beef because
of the cut.
We feel this was an extortionate amount of money to pay for a large lump of fat and we will not be going
there again and will certainly not recomed it to anyone else.

A great location with a lovely ambience. Unfortunately the food veers from the great to the very poor suggesting they have one good chef and one less skilled. My last trip included a very tasty whole mallard for two served on a wooden chopping board with water cress and some tasy potatoes. Unfortunately the mallard was raw, even after we sent it back to the kitchen for further cooking it re-emerged dripping in blood and impossible to cut.
