This 500 year old, Grade II listed roadside pub sits on the Cotswold Way, a few minutes from junction 18 of the M4 and in the village of Old Sodbury (the name may refer to the Iron Age fort on a hill just to the north) which itself lies on an old coaching route. The traditional charm and ambience has been retained inside where a single bar and a warren of dining spaces, all warmed by enormous log fires in winter, create a simple, homely atmosphere. The menu is not only enormous, the fresh fish and vegetable selections are particularly fine, but also offers outstanding value for money. Outside there is a small courtyard and a large garden including a children's play area. Dogs, no doubt, are especially welcome.

Landlady was very welcoming and friendly, as were the staff. Lovely ambieence. All the seafood we tried was of excelent quality and cooked to perfection (My wife agreed and she is a chef). Would hav got top marks but for the a very poor fillet steak. I would definatly return and would highly recomend to friends but as I said steer clear of the steaks..

I visited The Dog with three friends for a lunchtime drink and chat. We all ate from the £4.95 lunchtime menu. The value of all four meals was excellent, both in quality and quantity terms, hot food was served hot and cold food cold. Servive was courteous - we'll be going back at some stage.

A good place to drink

The Dog's strengths lie in its homely pub atmosphere, evident host of local regulars and warm and friendly approach. There is a wide choice of food on offer- from fish dishes to curry to the traditional roast. However, it's perhaps a better place to drink in than eat. Food is OK but pretty standard and lacks somewhat in quality at times.
