Refurbished a few years ago under enthusiastic new ownership, The Hole in the Wall has a new lighter feel, while retaining the ambience in which some of the country's finest Chefs have learned their trade. After the first year's trading the new owners were pleased to have been awarded "best business lunch of the year", as well as compliments and accolades from both regular customers and new.
The kitchen is under the guidance of Executive Chef Gerry Dowd, who has worked with the Roux brothers at The Waterside Inn in Bray, Peter Chandler at Paris House, John Burton-Race at L'Ortalan, and Richard Shepherd at Odin's. Gerry has created a menu offering modern British dining, strongly themed on West Country produce.
Everything is made on site, including breads, icecreams, a constantly-changing set lunch and pre-theatre menu - a superb 2 courses for £9.95 (available 12-3pm/6-7pm) and an evening à la carte menu that starts at £11.00 for a main course. The Hole in the Wall is a much-visited, friendly local restaurant, as well as one for special occasions.
A carefully-created wine list comes courtesy of Guy Adams, Managing Director of local independent wine merchant Heritage Wine. You can choose from over 70 wines and numerous wines by the glass, from all areas of the globe. Single-estate-bottled Chilean wines start the list at £11.95, while Chablis Premier Cru is £26.95 and Beaune 1999 Premier Cru less than £30 – so there are reasonably priced options to tempt anyone's palate. Regular diners will enjoy the ever-changing bin-end list.
The Hole in The Wall still remains one of Bath's culinary focal points.

We had become too regular, so gave The Hole a break, but it was good to be back. Yes they've a new chef with a new style, but still generous portions of excellent quality food, served by friendly staff who know their menus. As with other restaurants, we've found lately there is a trend for too long a wait between starters and mains. What is this trend????

My husband and i returned to The Hole in the Wall after a wonderful Valentines Day meal last year. We dined from the a la carte menu after much deliberation as they also offer 2 courses for ten pounds! We just couldn't resist the smoked duck starter and rib-eye steak and rump of lamb for my husband. Everything was incredibly tasty and the portions astounding! Our wine choice was based on the waiteress's enthusiastic recommendation and complimented the food perfectly.
We highly recommend the Hole in the Wall as a romantic, warm restaurant with enduringly high standards of food and great service.

This was our first trip to the hole in the wall and were celebrating a joint birthday for four!
It did not dissapoint. We were given a semi private room and the service was excellent. Our waiter was not too in our face but he did have a genuine character and was very good. The food was good, the one exception was a somewhat watery curry that the vegetarian had. The steak was particularly delicious. The dessert menu was a trifle boring but we were all pretty full by then. Excellent

Beautiful dining room and excellent service.
Shame the menu choice was so limited to only 4 mains, thought the food a little pricey, but it was served nicely.

After being told there was a two hour wait for a table @ Jamies Italian, my partner and I decided to find somewhere else. She mentioned she had been to the Hole In The Wall before and liked it so we decided to give it a try.
I love the Dining room, it is sooooo cosy but classy too with a beautiful open fire in the middle.
I was not bowled over by the menu, especially the mains, of which there were only 5 choices as the Pork, which I wanted was all gone. Instead I went for Baked Goats Cheese £6.00 which was very nice to start and Roast Cod Fillet for main £18.00. I was not impressed with this at all, it was practically tasteless and my partners Lamb, although very nice @ £17, with no Potatoes (at an extra cost of £2.25) I think is excessive. £19.25 for Lamb Shank, come on!!
I was not impressed with the service I have to say the girls although very polite, did not really seem to know what they were doing.
Lovley dining room but I won't be going back I’m afraid.

Another Invitations winner! As part of our "Friday Date Dinners", my husband and I visited The Hole in the Wall.
We were welcomed immediately and shown to our table. While choosing from the menu, I would like to have been offered a drink and bread. Our drinks order was taken with our food order and we did have to ask for bread. Fortunately, this was my only complaint. The food was really lovely, hot and well presented. My husband was impressed with the smoked chicken salad starter with its fresh taste and portion size. My duck confit did "hit the button". We both had the rack of lamb as the main. This was cooked to perfection, preserving the glorious taste of the meat. As usual, we shared a dessert. The baked cheese cake benefitted from the orange sobet, which lightened its heaviness.
Invitations gave us one free main course and our total bill with beer and a bottle of sparking water (my turn to drive), came to £48.

When my sister and her partner came up to stay i wanted to take them somewhere special and decided on The Hole in the Wall. Although the menu is is rather small, there is actually enough choice. I went for the goats cheese to start and the rack of Lamb with fondant potatoes. Really lovely. Attentive service and 25% off with our Invitation Platinum card was even better! Whenever next eating out in Bath, make sure this is at the top of your list!

We have yet to find anything but the highest praise for "The Hole" A warm welcome, friendly service, helpful table staff, with a good knowledge of their menu & wine list. A chef who will cook the aged fillet or the lamb rack to YOUR perfection and an Invitation card discount. Who could want more!

I ate in The Hole in the Wall for the first time last month and had a truly enjoyable lunch, saving 25% off the bill with my Invitation Card ! I started with Thai mussels which had just enough of a kick to give a different taste and followed with a lovely duck dish and the most amazing potato dauphinois, we finished the meal with a creme brulee and some cheeses. If you are in Bath on business or pleasure would really recommend this restaurant.
