Like the other members of the Bath Ales managed pub estate, The Hop Pole reflects the values of its owners, who look for character, location and potential in their establishments. Only Fairtrade coffee is served, bottled water is acquired from a local charity which provides third world water aid, ingredients are sourced from within a 40-mile radius and recycling is a way of life.
Housed in half of an extensive Georgian house, The Hop Pole, like Gaul, is divided into three parts: an intricate bar area, an intimate restaurant and a wonderful terraced garden. Somehow it has managed to retain the homeliness and charm of the traditional English pub, discard the grunge, trundle up market but avoid the excess cool of the brash new breed of gastropub. The cooking has real flair and the portions are more than adequate. All the food is fresh and seasonally adjusted. Pigeon and rabbit make regular appearances. This is one of the most popular gourmet pubs in the city.
