What we say

This Whiteladies Road pub has been part of the Clifton drinking scene for many years. Sharing its name with an Old West saloon/courtroom in Texas, it doesn't have quite as many gunslingers but does boast friendly staff and a rather more modern décor.

The Lily serves traditional food at reasonable prices with the Sunday roasts in particular worth popping in for. There's a selection of guest ales, good drinks promotions and the menus are appropriately seasonal with wraps, melts, curry and Italian cuisine all giving a wide range of options of what to soak up the pints with. The fairly recent refit of the place gives a clean twist to the pub eatery atmosphere and with Cheesy Chips on offer, it definitely retains a sense of tradition.

I have reviewed the Jersy Lilly before and in the past have been a fan of their no nonsense pub grub menu. Recently though the standard (and portion size) has decreased dramatically.

I went in for an early evening bite to eat and my partner had the sausages (which were good) and I had the steak. I ordered it medium rare but (as always in pubs) it arrived well done which was a disappointment. It was also very chewy and did not taste very good. There were too few overcooked and greasy chips and no side salad (despite the menu stating it came with one).

I think in future I'll stick to the Coach & Horses as their food seems to be getting better at the moment.

One mention of the sausages though, they were very good and the mash with them was creamy and went well with the gravy. If you are going to eat here, have the sausages!

The service was pretty good though......

What I ate: Rump Steak (if you can call it that)

Some friends and I had our supper in the Lily and were very happy we did so.

The menu is bistro pub type with a very good selection at competitive prices.

I had a steak that came well cooked. I asked for rare and sometimes in pubs it is a lottery on how it actually arrives but I was very happy with the result.

The portions are generous, my only gripe is the mustard is sachet portions rather than out of a mustard jar and it never seems to taste as good as proper english but there you go.

The owner was present and is very accommodating and was genuinely interested in us enjoying our food which is always nice.

My Girlfriend and I visited the Jersey Lily last week for a quiet evening. I have had drinks here before and there is always a nice buzz but I have never eaten here. There was a wide selection of dishes available on the menu as well as a selection of specials. My girlfriend opted for Chilli Nachos and I had a Pieminister Pie (all of which are available). The bill was very reasonable, the selection of drinks was great and the service was prompt. Whilst having dinner we had a game of scrabble and all in all, we had a very enjoyable evening. We will definitely be back !

What can I say? Every trip I've had to the Jersey Lily has been superb. Their food is excellent and for a very, very reasonable price (where else can you get a steak with all the sides for under a tenner?) plus their ale is very well kept, some of the best in Bristol. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The type of people it attracts (a mixture of young and old, students and professionals, men and women) are a good indication of how well this pub caters for all needs.

I normally hate the 'wine bar' type atmosphere of some places but even though the decor is slightly leaning towards the modern, it still 'feels' like a pub. You'll know what I mean if you visit.

All in all, I cannot fault it. This place is fantastic.
