What we say

A truckers' greasy spoon stop since the early 1960s, called, amongst other things, Popeye's Diner, The Lockside has, in recent years, has been transformed into an classy modern café by day and a contemporary bistro by night. Situated under a road bridge, the huge windows look out over stunning views of the floating harbour and of the Avon Gorge, with the Clifton Suspension Bridge dominating the westerly skyline. All grease has been successfully purged inside, where pastel colours and stylish retro furniture provide a chic setting for the modern English and European cuisine. Breakfast is a big attraction (the full English still satisfies its fair share of working appetites), but there are dishes and prices to suit everybody, from young mums taking morning coffee to business lunchers. The uncomplicated menu is sourced locally from fresh ingredients; Popeye may not have survived, but spinach and Olive Oyl, in her culinary form, certainly have.

I have been to Lockside on a number of occasions, both in the summer and in winter. In the summer it feels like you could be on holiday as you look out of the window on to the waterfront enjoying a bottle of your favourite wine.

Not only does this restaurant offer fantastic breakfasts where you can relax with the papers over a full English or pancakes (def need to book at weekends though), you can also get a delicious evening meal here whilst enjoying the lovely ambience of the place. I regularly pick the risotto when I visit, which changes its contents each time I go, and I can say that I have never been disappointed.

Lockside is certainly worlds apart from the cafe in Only Fools and Horses that it used to be and is def a place to visit.

What I ate: Squid with chorizo followed by risotto

A friendly welcome awaits you at Lockside and the waiting staff are attentive and know the menu, it was just a pity that this particular Friday night the restaurant was almost empty, so I felt a little like a goldfish in a bowl with two waiters to help. This wasn't helped when we had the wrong wine but a free replacement arrived very quickly with much apologising. A very nice starter of squid with chorizo, only dampened by the addition of chili jam which seemed to be a relative of Chinese cooking and didn't completely marry in my opinion. A main of chicken caesar salad followed and this was a masterclass, the salad was fantatsic. A nice atmosphere and the decor is lovely, I look forward to going back again on a slightly busier night.
