The Muset takes its place in Bristol's culinary history as one of the first b.y.o.s in the city, but has built its reputation over nearly 20 years of trading as a place to enjoy quality food in a relaxed atmosphere at prices that are as friendly as the staff.
You can still take your own wine although don't panic should you forget or choose not to: the wine list is very reasonable and a bottle of 2002 Vionta Albariño will hit the mark perfectly. Otherwise there's a small corkage charge.
The place has expanded over the years and is now a small group of adjoining rooms with a sympathetic contemporary interior design that incorporates bare brickwork alongside original local artwork. It works well, allowing for atmospheric nooks and crannies for the intimate meal or party space for group bookings.
On the food front, there are plenty of dishes to choose from off the à la carte menu, the fixed-price set menus and daily specials. The menu changes seasonally and is well balanced in its choice of classic, tried and trusted combinations alongside the more adventurous, contemporary efforts like the blue swimmer crab risotto cakes to start or the pork tenderloin with black pudding mashed potatoes main. The classic line extends to the puddings which can include sherry trifle and crème brûlée.
It's not hard to understand why The Muset has done so well over the decades; friendly staff serving unpretentious food at reasonable prices.

This was my first visit to The Muset. I was expecting great things, based on their internet site and from what friends had told me. I went along to celebrate a friend's birthday who also happens to be a neighbour.
First impressions weren't great - a fairly uninspiring part of Bristol which wasn't helped by the wheelie bins outside the restaurant. Once inside, our party of ten was led to what seemed to be a corridor with a dead-end. The tablecloth was made of paper - always a bad sign - and the chairs had an uninviting school-like quality about them. Apparently, it's one of Bristol's first bring-your-own-wine restaurants. Corkage is £2 per bottle of wine which is pretty reasonable.
The menu was intriguing but nothing really fuelled my tastebuds. I found it hard to get excited about anything.
The service was efficient and the staff were generally polite and attentive. Sadly the food left no great impression. I had wood pigeon to start, followed by rump of lamb. It was pleasant enough, if a tad over-salted, but it didn't excite me particularly. The vegetables were cooked al dente, which is how I like them, but there weren't enough of them. It felt as if I was eating at the staff canteen - you're allowed so many items but no more.
My sweet was pleasant enough - winter berries. My share of the bill for a three-course meal without wine was about £40 - steep for what was a distinctly average meal in a distinctly average setting. Will I go back there? Well, if it's on expenses, I might do but I doubt that I'll be setting foot in the place again if I have to cough up myself.

I took a group of 17 in as two were celebrating birthdays. Dispite there being another large group in that evening, we never felt that the staff were anything other than polite, attentive and knowledgeable.
The restaurant allowed us to decorate the table and also allowed us to bring in two birthday cakes which they decorated and produced after we had finished our desserts.
As it's a BYO, you bring as much or little wine as you want but only get charged corkage on those you open.
The food was fantastic and, despite the size of the group, it all arrived together.
Will definitely be going back again.

Good food, a little overpriced

The Muset has a decent a la carte menu but an uninspiring prix fixe menu, from the former i had a starter of scallops served with a pecorino salad. It was nciely cooked, the scallops plump and succulent and still with the roe attached but it was a little plain.
The main course of medallions of beef were cooked perfectly rare and the meat was of excellent quality in a cream peppercorn sauce of a nice consistency. It was served with fresh vegetables from which the cauliflower was really delicious - the first time i have willingly eaten more than a small mouthful. At almost £20 i cant help but feel the dish was overpriced for what it was.
The dessert came as somewhat of a disappointment, my lemon and pannacotta had barely a trace of lemon to it and lacked any punch at all.
3 courses for two came in at £65 and taking our own two bottles of wine shaved around £50 from the price. It was a little quiet inside and our table was too small which didn't help the ambience. The staff were friendly and polite however. Very good food but a little overpriced.

Having heard great things about the Muset we decided to go one winters evening! Unfortunately the evening began poorly, when we walked in and declared that we had booked a table, the chap stood at the front just looked at us and pointed at a table! We werent shown to the table or welcomed...poor start.
When we sat down i noticed that the table and chairs were very cheap, and then came the paper tablecloth, a very dissapointing show, also the table we were sat at was stuck right out in a gangway, it felt so impersonal!
However we ordered some drinks which were lovely and efficiently brought by our friendly waitress!
The menu was fairly impressive, with a good variety, the starters were overall very good. I had pigeon, which was cooked perfectly, my friends goats cheese starter was also very good, however my partners soup was very bland.
The main courses also went down fairly well, my partners beef was beautiful, however my lamb shank with ratatouille was a huge let down, the lamb had no flavour and wasnt tender, and the ratatouille had no flavour either. I probably wouldnt have minded if they had been half the price, the lamb at £17 was overpriced, when you consider the quality of Goldbrick House, Juniper or Brasserie Blanc who charge the same price.
Desserts were a mixed bag some great some average.
The evening overall was fairly good, moments of greatness but just too many things that were sub-standard!
Surroundings were poor, and the ambience was not convincing!
With so much choice in Bristol i wouldnt return, not until they get realistic with their prices! It aint all that!

I visited this restaurant with 8 friends. Non of us had been there before and so we were all thrilled to find that we had made a very good choice. The food was excellent with great service and surroundings. We weren't made to feel rushed and all had a wonderful evening.
This is a Bring Your Own restaurant although we ordered wine from them, which was very nice and very reasonably priced.
I will definately be visiting this restaurant again and would recommend to all.

13 of us spent the evening at Muset to celebrate my 40th Birthday. We have been to the restaurant on several occasions and have never left feeling disappointed. The welcome you receive is just the start, the friendly staff and most importantly the food which is fantastic. The BYO is just great, due to you being able to take your favourite wine and only have to pay a small corkage fee to enjoy it.
I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for top quality in relaxing atmosphere.

I visited this restaurant a while ago and was very impressed, the main reason we chose the Muset was we had a a few nice bottles of wine and The Muset is a bring your own restaurant. The restaurant was comfortable, had a nice atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. I ate the steak flambed in cognac with the peppercorn sauce and it was excellent. Food is expertly cooked, well presented and the service was great. Take advantage of the low corkage charge and the excellent food and visit Bristol's first BYO.
