Like the other members of the Bath Ales managed pub estate, The Salamander reflects the values of its owners, who look for character, location and potential in their establishments. Only Fairtrade coffee is served, bottled water is acquired from a local charity which provides third world water aid, ingredients are sourced from within a 40-mile radius and recycling is a way of life.
The Salamander is tucked away down a narrow side street in the middle of Bath Georgian splendour. The downstairs is the bar area, open plan but divided into three. Popular with regular afficianados of the Bath Ales range of beers, there's plenty of scope for informal dining (the ploughman's lunches are simple but magnificent), as the drinkers try to avoid the hops hanging from the ceiling. Upstairs there is an impressive restaurant with attached galley kitchen serving traditional English food (try the wild hare terrine): great city centre venue.

I visited the salamander recently and having read the above review I looked forward to a nice beer and good food, too often one is compromised by the other but In this case none was comprimised. The wife went for the hake and she said it was one of the nicest pieces of fish she has had outside of our native Cornwall. I chose the belly of pork and it was simply amazing full of flavour and crackle and accompanied with the puy lentils perfect alternative to mash. The service was very prompt both on the bar and our waiter was very good too. We ended up trying all of the fine ales on offer all 4 were well kept and completely different. This was our first experience of bath ales and we will try some of their others when I visit Bristol . My only gripe was the décor and toilets in need of a paint job.

A Bath Ales sidestreet pub with plenty of character, a good range of beer and a decent menu which reaches more towards gastropub style than your average steak n chips menu.
Hake, butterbeans and chorizo is a classic comibination and was boosted by a flavourful ratatouille clearly made with fresh vegetables rather being a frozen affair. The hake was ever so slightly past its best but was cooked and presented nicely and the chorizo was a little too mild in flavour for my preference.
Service was friendly and the food arrived quickly - perfect a workday lunch.
