The Square, Bristol's original, decadent and most exclusive members' club, has opened its dining room doors to the public. Situated on the ground floor of Clifton's Berkeley Square Hotel, The Square dining room offers one of the city's most elegant and contemporary dining experiences.
Serving exquisite European cuisine with a twist, the dining room is via an eclectic cocktail lounge filled with striking sculptures and beautiful artwork, all complemented by a full-size screen of moving projections celebrating various scenes of the natural world.
Head Chef, Damien Ryder, has combined knowledge of French, English and Mediterranean cuisine with quality ingredients sourced locally. Favourites from the à la carte include pigeon with potato and black pudding mille feuille and fillet steak with sauté potatoes, braised baby onions and bacon and mini cherry tomoto tatin.

Had a very average Sunday lunch of the standard that was being simultaneously served up in pubs and hospitals across the land: thick gravy, burnt Yorkshire puddings and soggy roast potatoes. Service was friendly and surrondings pleasant but this did not make up for the very slow service. Whether getting a single course to the table for all diners within 30 minutes of each other was beyond chef or the waiting staff we never found out.
Another restaurant that looks promising at the outset, but turns out not to be on top of the basics.

Fantastic night , hugely attentive good food. This is one of my favourate restaurants , atmosphere is very retro , new addition of garden out back is lovely and on those rare occasions we have a nice day is lovely to have pre dinner drinks and canopes.Cocktails are great too! Good atmosphere , intimate room thats never appears too busy , despite being fully booked .

We visited in September with 2 friends & we were all very impressed with the food & the service, which was excellent. The only comment my husband made was that they should have had steak on the menu (he's a steak man).

I have been here a few times now & I was suprised by the price increase that has occurred in a matter of months on the set menu. The starters & main course were good however pudding was dissapointing, creme brulee runney in middle & cheese cake very bland.
On this visit the service wasn't great either, we were in a party of 4 & had to wait on each course for at least 1 member of the groups food to be served, we also had to ask where the side order was which had been over looked & didn't arrive until half way through the main the course.

I have been to the square around 6-7 times in the last 18 months and every time apart from the last visit has been an experience to remember.
The old style menu of 3 courses for £19.95 was fantastic lots of choice, amazing service and the food expertly prepared.
however I returned not long ago for a birthday meal with friends, the price has increase to £24 for 3 courses which I thought was still reasonable given how superb it had been in the past. This time I was extremely disappointed in every course especially the Lamb Pasty for my main which was no different than a Lamb pasty from and high street Cornish pasty shop.
The service also was not up to scratch and the dining room was rather empty for a Saturday night. It was quite embarrassing for me as I had built the place up so much to our friends.
