South Bristol's various "up and coming" areas have certainly been rocketing in the last few years and The Star & Dove in Totterdown is the perfect ingredient, promising great things to both local residents and diners from further afield.
Situated near the edge of the glorious Victoria Park, The Star & Dove is the perfect stop after an amble around in the early evening sun. The traditional pub exterior leads into an eclectic bar area with a mish mash of reclaimed leather armchairs and wooden tables on original Victorian parquet floors. The mixed clientele of trendy 30-somethings and locals (on Fridays, Mum's Club offers organic purées for babies) suggests a real gastro pub at the heart of the community. Bar food, served Tuesday to Sunday, includes homemade sausages and charcuterie, British cheeses and pickles and homemade pork pies. The great British pub quiz is hosted on Tuesday evenings with pasta and pizzas at just £5.
Make your way upstairs to the restaurant and the scene changes. Dark blue walls, original drawings and banquet seating around linen-clothed tables makes for comfortable dining. An array of interesting reviews includes a rare 5-star write up from the Evening Post.
Chef and Proprietor, Eamon Fullalove, previously at the forefront of Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall, offers a regularly changing menu of well-executed modern Italian dishes from locally-sourced ingredients and cooked with passion, including seared scallops to start and leg of lamb with rosemary potatoes for mains. There is also a good selection of wines available under £20.

Mixed Feelings

Went to the Star for Sunday lunch with a few friends after weeks of saying that we would go and check it out we finally did.
The pub itself is split in two, dining room and bar/family room and there is a big difference.
We shared some olives, which were reasonably price for £2 but lacked quality (they were the type you get in any supermarket)
For the Lunch i had Roast belly or pork £11.95 and the others had beef £12.95. The quality of the meat was superb but we have massive issues with the portion size of veg and roast potatoes, I had 2 small half roasts and we shared a small bowl of broccoli/red cabbage and spring greens and the thought of paying £6 for an apple crumble was a little out of the question.
So we left feeling disappointed and it’s a real shame as this place is in walking distance i think the next time I’d definitely get in the car and go to one of the following
Spotted Cow (Bedminster)
Marlborough Tavern (Bath)
Pony & Trap (Chew Magna)

The New years eve meal at Star and Dove was the best ever. The food was amazing and presentation had the wow factor.
The staff were friendly and professional and described every course perfectly. We had a fantastic time and the chefs had a standing ovation afterwards.
If dosen't get better than that. The restaurant is spacious and the pub downstairs is cozy and vibrant.

Very bad experience, long wait, unfriendly staff, poor food and very over priced for a dodgy looking pub. Half the food did not show up and when some of the food did it looked liked it was picked out of the bin.

There were nine in our party and when I arrived, five were already sat down with drinks. I went to the bar, but was advised that they would come to the table to take our order, after a short wait they took our drinks order, but then we had a long wait until our food order came, and that was only after chasing them.
When the food came out it came in waves, some times with a noticeable wait until everybody was served, which was a pity as the quality of the food is excellent.
The menu is varied and very interesting. Some of our group had the Full English Breakfast starter, which look wonderful with fried quail egg, bacon, fried bread etc. My Chowder was good, although the pickled mushrooms were a bit different. The main course and puddings were of similar interest. My black pudding pie with the roast belly pork was wonderful.
Overall we had a lovely evening and would happily visit again. My only suggestion to the restaurant would be to concentrate more on the service level than the presentation of the food, which is a bit OTT sometimes.

I have not visited the star & dove in totterdon for a long time due to previous owners but latley have heard of good reviews of a new young exciting team going in a turning british cuisine on its head and was NOT DISSAPOINTED! the service was excellent and the food was michelin quality all in a relaxed pubby environment. I have been back many times since and each time gets better. my last visit had items such as black pudding fritters with smoked mousse for starters and ribeye steak with marrowbone & tripe sauce as main. This is without mentioning the homemade bread that would challenge any bakery in the area that fills the air as soon as you walk in. the prices have not changed over the past months ranging from about £8 and 2 - 3 courses from £13 - £17. We eat in top quality restaurants all the time but now we have found this... We have our new local! keep up the good work!

Could be so much better

I've eaten once at the upstairs restaurant and a few times in the bar. Regarding the former, although the food was really very good, the whole experience was let down by the fact that the (already) pricey food did not have veggies included and that the ladies bathroom had no drying facilities for your hands - no towel rail, hot air dryer, paper towels - nothing.
Downstairs, again the food is great (if pricey for the area - this is still Bemmie/Totterdown!) but the service is always poor - uninterested staff who seem to be hired for their looks/hipness rather than their customer service skills. I really want to like this place as it's my nearest decent pub but every time I go there is somethng that niggles - whereas somewhere like Banco Lounge delivers every time.

My husband and I decided to pop in for sunday lunch, it was fantastic, great service, lovely relaxed atmosphere. We both ordered pork, which was amazing, it melted in the mouth, the veg was good and the roast potatoes were good, however, would have preferred them a little crispier. The tirimisu was the best I have ever had and would happily go back and just order 5 portions of it, just for me!!!!! It is a child friendly pub and we will definately go there again and take our two young children.

10 Course Delights!
Rating - Overall: 5 Food: 5 Service: 4 Ambience: 4

myself and a fellow food-obsessed colleague decided to test out the weather with The Star and Dove's Tasting Menu which runs once a month. I was prepared to indulge in 7 courses but in fact it turned out to be more like 10-11 with all the added little treats along the way.
The food was exceptional and the service fast and efficient considering the complicated timing of everyones different dishes at different times.
Having only dinned downstiars one weekend, I knew that the food would be good, but this was something else!
The tasting menu is pricey (£40) but it is definatly worth every glutinous penny and I would recommend it to the food obsessed and those that are very hungry too!
I think the menu changes every month with a theme but not definatly sure on that one.

Good Gastro Grub

Myself and my boyfriend dined in the upstairs restaurant. Excellent food, good choice of wine and friendly fast service. The food is posh gastro pub-type fare, so the portions are a good size. The restaurant is quite small but the tables are well spaced and placed so it's a good place for a romantic meal as you don't feel crowded by people on other tables. It's not cheap but the pries are fair for the type of food and service.

Steak Out

I visited on one of their Wednesday steak nights. A decent rump and a glass of wine for a tenner - what a more could a lady ask for. I've since been back for this several times and the steaks are consistently good, come with proper home made potato chips, a really nicely dressed rocket and coriander salad and potent alioli dip. I also really like the atmosphere in the pub; a mish mash of old chairs and couches - vert eclectic and cosy.

Myself and my boyfriend have been to the Star and Dove on quite a few occasions but I can't see us going again anytime soon after our last visit.
As a gastro pub, the food is nothing special and over-priced. We had, what we thought at the time, would be a lovely winter warmer of Macaroni Cheese which priced at £6-00 we thought would be a lush large bowl of cheesey goodness. What we did infact receive was an over cooked, dry, child's portion of something that may have once resembled Mac Cheese. Unfortunately, I have heard similar reports from others.
The Star & Dove seems to have the potential to be a great place. Having more options of places to visit in Totterdown is a nice prospect but they don't seem to have got the mix right just yet. But here's hoping they do!
As for the restaurant upstairs, we never ventured there. The price list is rather outstanding and after our experiences downstairs, it didn't seem to be worth the risk.
