An award-winning pub, specialising in local produce. The food is modern English with a Mediterranean feel; fresh fish is delivered daily from Brixham, all meat is from the local surrounding farms and vegetables are grown locally. The dishes are original and interesting but uncomplicated, keeping it simple, using exact techniques. The balance and depth of flavour signal the pedigree of Chef Alexander Venables.
Alexander and Alison took over The Tollgate Inn in 1999, and have achieved their "2 AA Rosettes" for their fine cuisine and "Four AA Red Diamonds" for their luxury en-suite bedrooms. The Tollgate Inn has also been awarded the national title of "The Publican Catering Pub of The Year 2004".

Found this gastro pub online, and decided to try. Warm, relaxed and comfortable dining room (complete with house cat asleep on the seat at its own table, and some lovely local paintings for sale on the walls), polite welcome and service. My partner had pea & ham soup, then calf's liver; I had a set lunch of goats' cheese salad, then Cornish fish. Good value, well - but not fussily - presented, and delicious. Worth a visit!

My husband and I have been to the Tollgate on many occasions, it has always been fantastic. The staff are great, we have always received great service and the landlady is always happy to chat and make you feel comfortable. The rooms have not long been re-decorated and we have stayed in Jake and Samantha room, both fantastic and really comfortable beds. The food is amazing and great value. However, I do have just one little niggle and that is on our most recent visit I ordered pavlova for dessert and it was just a little to hard and not gooey enough for me. But I forgive them and will definately go back again.

A lovely pub with outstanding food and service. If I were to be overly critical, I would say the landlady is overly attentive to locals to the detriment of the occasional visitor. The welcome could be friendlier.
