The Upton Inn

What we say

Tom Jones and Mrs Waters performed their celebrated dining scene, gazing lustfully at each other from opposite ends of a dining table in The Upton Inn, in the film of “Tom Jones” but, when mercilessly cross-questioned on this by this writer, the new management (which took over in February, 2008) kept their mouths full and lips closed as to whether this was the Upton in question.. This picturesque creeper-covered Upton is situated on a beautifully wooded hillside between Bristol and Bath and is the first pub venture of a company called EDL. It offers Hall and Woodhouse ales (apparently the hand-pumped Badger range is not usually found this far north) and, if the weather is fine, drinkers can enjoy the view from the outside seating that surrounds the pub on three sides. Inside, there is a separate restaurant with chandeliers and an ornate ceiling and the new chef offers an English menu at lunchtimes and a more European a la carte list in the evenings. There is also a Sunday carvery. If there's a choice between a fictional seductress and an all too real hand-pumped badger, is it any wonder that most Upton regulars unhesitatingly sett upon the latter?

Very pleasant and refurbished since my last visit five years ago. The food was lovely, but smaller plates for the over 55s. The later evening meals looked a bit pricey, but there were different things on the menue you may not get in other pubs. There was a nice log fire where we were sitting. We left at around 7pm and I cannot say the place was buzzing like other pubs in the area. Which is a shame as the owners have put a lot of effort into this Inn. I shall be coming again, but on our own as most of our friends have large appetites and expect a bigger plates.
