Lewis Carroll tells us that the walrus says it is "time to talk of many things" and this long-established, family eatery is as idiosyncratic as they come. Situated conveniently for theatreland, the walls are gloriously covered with old posters and playbills. Odd paired tables and chairs, nooks and crannies filled with junk, candlewax dripping, the overall feel is the shabby chic of the world turned upside down. The overall mood, however, is intimate and the menu provides diverse English dishes to family recipes (their home-made burgers and coleslaw are signature offerings) together with items that acknowledge influences from further afield, Malaysian chicken curry, for example. All ingredients are locally sourced and there is an extensive vegetarian and vegan menu.

This was our second visit in just over a week. All previous visits to this branch (i contrast to the Bath one) had found the restaurant almost empty, but on our previous visit we were lucky to get a seat. This time it wasn't quite so busy but occupancy was quite reasonable.
The waiters and waitresses are always friendly, but this time our waitress was overflowing with explanations of the menu - not entirely necessary since we are relative regulars, but always welcomel in fact I found out one or two things I hadn't known before.
We both ordered burgers, mine the Walrus Chili Burger (1/4 lb) with chips. I think this is the first time I have had one of their burgers and it was excellent. My choice was influenced by seeing several 1/2 lb versions of the same meal being delivered and thinking that it looked great if slightly too large! I had my regular drink at the W&C of lime juice.
My burger was very good. The chips were nicely browned and crispy, if not quite as hot as I might have expected.

Walrus and Carpenter is a lovely bistro style restaurant. I went there as a family get together before christmas. The menu was great as it catered for all the family(youngsters, carnivores and vegetarians alike), the portions were AMPLE, and the food had a fresh truly homemade taste to it. We also wanted to say thanks to the people who served us. They were accommodating, chatty and made us all feel welcome! It was a thoroughly enjoyable lunch, and we will definitely go back again!
