Lewis Carroll tells us that the walrus says it is "time to talk of many things" and this long-established, family eatery is as idiosyncratic as they come. Situated conveniently for theatreland, the walls are gloriously covered with old posters and playbills. Odd paired tables and chairs, nooks and crannies filled with junk, candlewax dripping, the overall feel is the shabby chic of the world turned upside down. The overall mood, however, is intimate and the menu provides diverse English dishes to family recipes (their home-made burgers and coleslaw are signature offerings) together with items that acknowledge influences from further afield, Malaysian chicken curry, for example. All ingredients are locally sourced and there is an extensive vegetarian and vegan menu.

Popping over from Bristol to Bath on the train is always a treat for a spot of shopping and a glass of vino or two...and the Walrus and the Carpenter is the perfect location to stop in, have a cosy meal, a bottle of wine and while away the rest of the day.
Centrally located with a buzzy little atmosphere,we went there and enjoyed a cheese and bacon burger each - a delicious combination of powdery bap, streaky bacon, perfect cheeseburger cheese and a meaty patty. And the banana split to follow, whilst being a throwback to the 80s, was simply delicious.
I'd always go there when needing a little pickmeup.

We are fairly regular visitors to both the Bath and Bristol branches. I usually have the Malaysian Chicken Curry. On this occasion though I chose Sausages and Mash. I admit to sometimes playing a game of roulette at the Walruses. They have lunch and dinner menus, both of which are available at lunch time. Most of the dishes are the same, but the lunch ones are slightly smaller. It has been known for a request off one menu to be fulfilled off the other.
Sometimes I neglect to say which menu and the waitress will rarely ask - I think the theory is that you are then served from the lunch menu and that's certainly what happened this time. This is not a problem in that they are very reasonable if you don't get what you want, but you do need to be aware of it.
As always the food was good value and, despite the slight eccentricity already mentioned, the service was good. This is always a good, slightly off-the-beaten-track, stop for lunch during a Bath shopping trip.
