Previously known as the Old Profanity Showboat this old coaster was renamed for St Thekla (Greek for “divine glory”), a first century Christian witness, who escaped death from burning, being eaten by lions and being pulled apart by bulls, and lived to great and peaceful old age. Her namesake does not go back quite so far, having been built in 1959, and her early life, trailing timber around the Baltic, was not quite so adventurous either. Acquired by the musician Vivian Stanshall, she was brought to the Bristol Floating Harbour as an art gallery and showcase for the performing arts. Having changed hands, she has now metamorphosed in to an underground might club and mainstay of the Bristol music scene. The top deck, refurbished to expose the original rivets and ironwork and using light wood panelling and polished copper sheeting to give a maritime feel, contains The Old Profanity Bar which offers standard pub grub fare, including burgers, sandwiches, salads and an enormous range of pizzas and on Sundays Pappa Jones serves up his beef, lamb, chicken and nut roasts. Seating extends out on to the extensive top deck where patio heaters and large umbrellas protect diners from any Baltic weather that might choose to blow along.
