OK, we're in the land of four-poster beds and huge fireplaces here, so you can imagine the dining experience: panelled walls, heraldic shields, the odd serving -wench thrown on to the blaze to keep the baronial halls snug. There are three dining rooms (The Tower, The Oriel and The Baron's Sitting Room, each seating no more that 30) but it's not all roast beef of Olde England and treacle pudding, although they do those well. There are international dishes as well, in which the castle's kitchen garden and vineyard play their part. The castle's founder, Edward Stafford, was beheaded in 1521. Perhaps if he knew that his creation was now the only Tudor castle in England to be run as a hotel he would blow his top…if he had one.

A girly treat

I was treated to a surprise visit to Thornbury Castle to meet some of my girl friends and celebrate my birthday over afternoon tea. And what a treat it was! Having all made the effort to dress up we were thoroughly spoiled with a wonderful selection of homemade scones and cakes with unlimited pots of freshly brewed tea. The staff could have been a little more attentive, however, it could be looked upon as them trying to be unobtrusive. This is not a place to go for a riotous laugh, more a place to relax and feel like a lady!
