Located in the sophisticated Chapel Quarter area, on the West side of the city centre, Tonic is certainly causing a stir on the Nottingham eating out scene, winning Best Newcomer, and runner-up in the Best Design and Best Use of Local Produce categories of The Nottingham Restaurant Awards 2007.
The restaurant has been designed by one of Britain's top interior designers and is quite simply stunning. A beautiful harmony of funky furniture and atmospheric lighting creates a cool, stylish feel, crowned with an impressive cinematic art installation. There is a strong emphasis on comfort throughout.
Menus are based on the best locally-sourced produce, cooked to order with the emphasis on natural flavours and colours, and are updated seasonally. Service is attentive and friendly, and the restaurant benefits from an exclusive balcony bar.
Whether you opt for the delicate simplicity of the twice baked Lancashire cheese soufflé, with a shallot and thyme confit or an exquisite looking game terrine on homemade brioche with plum chutney, the impact will be striking. The equally impressive mains include herb crusted rack of Derbyshire lamb, with gratin potato as well as the beautifully succulent pan fried sea bass with crab and ginger tortellini. You will not be disappointed!
A pre-theatre menu is now available from 6pm-7pm Monday to Saturday, so enjoy your meal in good time to catch the performance – the perfect evening out.

Once we knew our son was going to be spending the next four years of his life in Nottingham, I searched for a suitable restaurant to celebrate the next phase of our life as a couple. The Tonic reviews were really encouraging so I booked.
On arrival, the downstairs bar looked deserted and we were slightly apprenhensive but followed the music ,which led us to a buzzing first floor bar. No Gordons or Kronenberg 1664! However, substitutes were forthcoming. After a while we went upstairs to the restaurant and were immediately shown to the table I had requested ~ a booth. well worth it for a romantic evening.
Service was attentive, if a little forgetful ~ no bread, even though it had been ordered. However, once we reminded the waiter, it was delivered, at no cost.
The food was really wonderful and beautifully presented. I have just checked Tonic's website. Unfortunately the Autumn menu is not yet published, so I couldn't possibly describe the gorgeous ice cream that came with my leek and cream cheese roulade.
We both decided to give the desserts a miss because we were full, except for a tiny space for one of Tonic's special coffees. I do think they need to check on their bar ordering system because the spirit needed for mine was unavailable. The coconut-based coffee i did have was a tad cool and my husband felt slightly short-changed on his remy-based one.
Anyway, these tiny complaints would certainly not stop us going there again. The dinner for two with wine came to about £80.
