  Oozing with contemporary chic, I was surprised to discover that Malmaison offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, quite unlike the aloof and cool I would normally associate with its location - The Mailbox. Malmaison's warmth is epitomised by the red accent colour which is visible throughout the otherwise dark and seductive interior. The occasion was a birthday celebration meal and the evening started off quite promising thanks to the welcoming buzz emanating from the lively Brasserie. However, despite the excellent menu selection and tasty, well portioned dishes, a staff shortage, meant the meal dragged out for almost three hours! Front of house staff were very apologetic, but an average wait of around 40 minutes between courses left an unpleasant taste; and with no one on hand to pour wine this made the meal all the more harder to digest. A number of other guests appeared unhappy with the situation too, which was a shame because overall the atmosphere and food could not be faulted and the staff did try to make the best of a bad situation. Perhaps a return visit will offer a better service experience.
