I went with a largeish work group for the bargainous set menu deal and at the Market Place you get what you pay for. Although everyone agreed the bog standard stuff like fish & chips and sausage & mash were fine I ventured for a lovely sounding broad bean and asparagus risotto...and wish I hadn't. The risotto was soggy, swimming in olive oil, overcooked and more like a savoury rice pudding - I didn't even need to taste it to tell it was bad news. In addition the asparagus hadn't been trimmed properly so I had the pleasure of chewing through woody stems.
When I sent it back, the waitress told me 'well that's how we do our risotto here' - charming. No apology. My friend also sent hers back and as she was vegetarian the only choice she now had on the set menu was a bowl of chips - which they charged her for. They also charged for an extra meal at the end of the evening which I'm sure was a mistake but annoying none the less.
My starter was seared beef on a salad - you'd expect pink/rare meat but no, little shavings of cooked through chewy meat.
It's a shame as it's a lovely building/atmosphere and does good wine/whisky and when I've ordered a la carte it's been a lot better. OK for pub grub but they're playing at fine dining.
