Honestly, I am shocked that the restaurant is still going. Not much has changed since Jay Rayner reviewed the restaurant in 2006. My friend and I had food in the downstairs Brasserie around three a clock on a Sunday. On the menu were three choices, mushroom tart, beef burger and a fish dish. I had the beef burger (£10.50) and my friend had the mushroom tart (£9.50). I really don't mind if the menu consist of a few but high quality dishes but the price was the only extraordinary about the dishes, they were both bland and boring. The tart was too dark and dry (reheated in the oven for too long?) and my beef burger was undercooked. The side salad was a heap of lettuce leaves without any dressing. Service was very poor and staff had to be called over by us to give us some service. After the meal our plates were removed in complete silence despite my plate displaying a heap of undercooked meat. It would have been nice if the waitress had asked us if our meals were ok. We also ordered coffees but they never got around to serve us. Staff seemed busy polishing cutlery completely ignoring the customers. We got up after half an hour wait for our coffees and went to pay at the till (we could probably have walked out without paying and no one would have noticed!). After we left we noticed that they had charged us for the coffees and we went back. The manager was called to refund our money. He didn’t offer an apology which we would have appreciated and also showed no signs of regret when I told him that we decided to buy our coffee somewhere else because staff seemed to think that polishing cutlery was more important than attending to the customers. Also we had to specifically tell the manager to refund us the service charge which was £0.85. All in all, the lunch was very disappointing.
